Over the past month, Samantha, Sarah and Miriam have road-tested Next velvet platforms, red wedges and several incarnations of the knitted cardigan. But what about the plait?
|
The latest craze to have entangled itself in the female style subconscious was, somehow, a step too far for any of the leaders’ wives. Off the campaign trail, the plait is to become summer’s most pernicious beauty trend.
Yes, the pigtail is back, in all its anti-fashion-posturing glory. This may come as a shock to those who have just perfected the flick and go. But as always we follow where Hollywood leads, and if Diane Kruger, Kate Hudson, Emma Watson and Sienna Miller aren’t enough of a reason to ditch the straighteners, then at least invest in a fake.
Because while Sam Cam may have thought that a waist-grazing, woven ponytail was out of her follicle reach at four weeks’ notice, in fact one can be bought and clipped in, in seconds.
Making a convincing case for the plait as an intelligent choice for older, more sophisticated women, the hairstylist Luke Hersheson said: “It gives you the look of a hair-do without being too contrived. It’s harking back to the sporty minimalism of the Nineties, and it works really well with the clothes that are coming through now.”
Hersheson is something of an expert on plaits. He tends to the locks of many celebrities, in his father’s salon and on magazine shoots for Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar. He has been the architect of many groomed but nonchalant-looking plaits in the past six months. And as with most trends, although they can be adapted to suit the older woman, the breeding ground is particularly high among younger women.
“Teenagers are amazingly good at styling their hair now,” said Hersheson. “It’s partly because for the past decade there has been no single dominating haircut, so styling has become increasingly more important.”
If Hollywood’s red carpets and international fashion magazines were not honour enough for what is, on the face of things, an unpromising, if practical, hair solution with undeniably porcine overtones, Alexander Wang, Miu Miu and Balmain all incorporated pigtail statements on their catwalks.
And since it is not possible to be hipper than these three labels at the moment, it is fair to conclude that the plait’s moment is finally here.
The plait is not an obvious fashion trophy. In many ways, it is the quintessence of anti-fashion, especially when you reference early plait enthusiasts such as the Swedish children’s literary character Pippi Longstocking and King Christian IV of Denmark, who reigned wearing a single plait, tied with a red ribbon, in the late 16th and early 17th century.
Cool girls, traditionally, have not worn plaits. But style-wise we live in an age of twisted perceptions, so for the moment the plait is perfect. A single session of plaiting could help you through several tangle-free, low-maintenance festivals this year. Sleeping in it would add to its rolled-out-of-bed, dragged- through-a-mosh-pit- backwards lustre.
So excited are Hersheson’s customers about his plaiting ability that soon the salon, based in Conduit Street, Mayfair, will launch plait extensions. Big, lustrous, thick coils, 20-22 in long, the ropes of real, ethically sourced hair come in a dozen colours, will cost around £50, clip easily on to women’s own tresses and can also be unplaited and worn as low ponytails.
Not even the global calamity of Cheryl Cole being morally bludgeoned into removing (some of) her hair extensions in her L’Oreal shampoo advert has tarnished the appeal of fake hair — quite the reverse.
Today, fake locks are just as important a part of a woman’s fashion staple as her heels and handbag. If only someone had told the leaders’ wives.
