The largest city of Kenya, Nairobi’s skyline takes away the breath with its fluttering lights.
Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and its largest city as well. The word Nairobi is derived from Maasai phrase which means ‘to the place of cool waters’. The city is famously known as ‘Green city in the sun’. From a rail depot, this city has developed into Africa’s 12th largest city and the most populous city in East Africa. The city is inhabited along Nairobi River. The history of the city is an interesting tale. It was an uninhabited swamp when a railway line was built along it and turned it into a railway station. The location was chosen because it was a central place between Mombasa and Kampala. The city was rebuilt during 1900’s and Nairobi became the capital of British invasion.British centralized the city and built hotels for visitors. After the Kenyan independence from British, the city swelled fast which became a challenge on the administration of the city. Power outages and water shortage became everyday issue until recent evelopments in city planning have improved the living conditions of the city.
The climate of Nairobi is a Subtropical highland climate. The hot season comes during December to March whilst the colder season months are of June and July. However, the temperature average is not extreme. Nairobi experiences mild cold and heat with the highest temperature touching 24C in summer and lowest temperature touches 10C. It is due to its close position from equator. The rainfall Nairobi receives is also average throughout the year. The city hosts Africa’s largest stock exchange, Nairobi Stock Exchange. The city also hosts headquarters of international organizations and corporations like General Electric, Coca-Cola, Airtel, Google as well as UNEP and UN-Habitat headquarters. Kenya Airways is the fourth largest airline of the subcontinent and works through International Airport of the city. The city is a manufacturer of textiles, clothing, beverages, cigarettes and processed food. The city is also a tourist attraction as well as commercial hub of Kenya.
The city’s central business district marks the skyline of the city with important buildings like City Hall, Parliament building, I&M building, Kenyatta international conference center and many more.
This skyline is the major tourist attraction in the city because it resembles to the developed Asian and American cities. These skyscrapers started building after the construction boom in late twentieth century and early 21st century. Some of the headquarters are being transferred to less expensive areas of the city mainly upper hill area. The tallest skyscrapers in the skyline of Nairobi include Times tower of 460ft, Teleposta towers of 390ft, Kenyatta International Conference Center of 344ft, NSSF building of 338ft, I&M Bank Tower of 330ft and Government Office Conference Hall soaring to 322ft.Nairobi is a multicultural and bilingual city. It is strongly influenced by British rule as observed from the names of city’s localities like Parklands and Hurlingham. Mosques, churches, gurdwaras and temples are scattered in quite large number within the city to suit the diverse cultures to which the residents belong. Immigrants from India, Pakistan, Sudan and Somalia have established communities in the city.
