The contract has to be very specific and mention all the details that are agreed upon verbally by both the parties. It should include details such as the exact length of time that the photographer is required to stay, the number of photographers who are to accompany the wedding photographer, how many assistants would be included etc. What are the shots to be included? What is the narrative style that’s decided upon? Make sure to include the date, time and venue of the wedding, the venue of the reception, are there any pit stops during the day, etc. Also include the contact numbers, addresses and other contact details of the important people associated with the wedding. These details may seem a little frivolous and unimportant but are nevertheless required, for, when things don’t go as planned, these are the minuscule things come in handy. It’s thus better to have everything written down.
Also discuss about the number of photos do you expect to receive, when do you expect to receive the wedding pictures, do have rights to republish and distribute them, etc. Most photographers include their logo on every picture. For those who don’t want the logo to be seen can mention this specifically in the contract and get them removed.
The contract should also mention about the terms of payment very clearly. Photographers have different modes of payment. Some collect 50 % of the payment as upfront fees and collect the rest on the date of the wedding and then there are some who demand complete payment before the wedding day itself. There are some who agree to set up a payment plan with the wedding couple. For those who’ve set up a payment plan, make sure that the details about the payment plan are mentioned very clearly. Since the wedding photographer is committed to the entire day, it’s important that they be fed.
