Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is one of those psychological complexities that alienate the child from his/her parents or care givers. Extensive scientific researches have made further revelation of this disorder that digs deep into the psychological structure of a child, who is worst struck by this disease. Oppositional defiant disorder is basically a behavior disorder that is distinctively seen among children. Like Reactive attachment disorder, this psychological disorder is characterized by defiance and erratic behaviors. The hostile attitude of the child toward his/her parents further makes it difficult for the parents to confront their child. It requires immediate attention form parents as the child is practically against everyone who tries to pamper or someone who make attempts to teach. ODD among adolescents is a typical case of uncontrolled anger and arrogance by the child. The utter lack of disregard by the child to all near and dear ones create major trouble for others. Oppositional defiance that has increased over the years for shear negligence by the parents, has badly hit school and college going adolescents. Though the actual reason for this disorder is still unknown, a detailed development theory suggests that the problem begins when the child is a toddler. Researches also conclude that a disturbed child may face major setbacks academically and faces problem to develop autonomous skills. Unfortunately, just like Reactive attachment disorder, this psychological problem also persists in case of improper care by the parents to resolve development oriented issues. Oppositional defiant disorder has a set of symptoms that should be kept in mind while diagnosing a child. Common symptoms like frequent bad temper, hostile arguments with adults, rudeness towards requests from adults, angry attitude, and revengeful behaviors are open proofs that specify the existence of this disorder. Behavior disorders of a child can only be treated with proper therapy. In this context, disorder therapy is one of the best ways to deal with a disturbed child. The four procedures of therapy to deal with defiant disorders include: Individual psychotherapy: It is a cognitive behavioral procedure to improve communication skill as well as anger management skills. Family Therapy: Psychologists often undertake a series of procedures to improve the family system by encouraging better communication with the child and better understanding. Peer group Therapy: One of the best ways to improve the social behavior of the child is by exposing him to communications with friends. This aims to improve their inter-personal skills. Medication: Though it is not the best way to treat ODD problems, yet certain psychologists as well as psychiatrists do resort to medicines if the disorder is responsive to medicines. While there are various treatments for defiant children, yet, the best way is proper care and understanding by the parents. The parents or the care givers should be more open to the needs and requirements of the child. Such disorders arise from lack of proper care and attention from parents. It is most likely that children of divorced parents are more exposed to Oppositional defiance.
