For hundreds of years, herbs have been the main natural remedies for treating liver problems. In both the West and the East, they are widely used. In no place is this link stronger than in Chinese medicine, where there are many complex formulas that have had therapeutic effects on the liver. The best ones, with the most significant effects, include the following: “Pro-Liver Pill,” “Liver Care,” “Liv-52,” “Jianpi Wenshen” pill, “Binggan” pills, “Binggan Tang,” “Yizhu” decoction, “Yiergan Tang” and “Xiaochaihu Tang.”
But despite all we know, and all of the positive results, nobody has found out exactly what ingredients in these herbs actually protect the liver. And knowing this could open the door to powerful new treatments. That is what a new study reported in the journal Chinese Medicine sought to discover.21
Researchers analyzed a lot of previous studies, including 300 species of plants from 92 families known to have effects on the liver. These plants generally contain a slew of “phytochemicals” that come in many forms. That is on top of the plant’s own essential oils and active ingredients.
The most-studied herbs for liver protection, across the entire world, are these five:
1. Milk Thistle
Also known as “silymarin,” it’s used for many liver diseases. Benefits are most often seen in those who have alcohol-caused cirrhosis of the liver. It is regarded as being safe, with no adverse effects.
2. Glycyrrhizin
This is a specific extract from the “Glycyrrhiza” plant. It has been shown to fight infections and growth of bacteria, especially “H. pylori.” It could protect the liver from viruses (especially hepatitis) and from tumor growth, as well.
3. Schisandra
In Chinese, it’s known as wu wei zi. It’s widely used to treat viral hepatitis. Its seeds have antioxidant and detoxification powers in the liver. Its ingredients have been found to protect liver cells from inflammation, cancer and HIV. Even damaged livers could be helped with this herb.
4. Saiko
Also known as “bupleurum,” this one is a well-known treatment in Japan’s “Kampo” style of medicine. In many animal studies, it’s been shown to protect liver cells.
5. Phyllanthus Amarus
This one is a widely used Chinese herb for helping nourish the liver and protect it from disharmony.
The researchers, in the end, found that ingredients in the widely used herbs have liver-protective activities, including antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antioxidant, as well as the capacity to regulate the immune system and liver disease. They all have main substances and supporting substances in them that blend together to act in this way.
It seems that the liver is an organ that truly responds to the right herbal treatment. In China, they’ve been doing it for well over 2,000 years. The idea is slowly being accepted elsewhere now — in Asia, Europe and North America. There are still big differences in philosophies behind how they work, but the researchers hope that Western and Chinese medicine will start integrating toward common goals. Those goals are the potential creation of alternative-based drugs that are powerful enough to truly protect at-risk livers from disease.
