If you’re thinking about becoming a medical assistant, it should come as good news that there are many medical assistant programs at schools around the nation that you can choose for your professional training. This would be an excellent job choice for you if you are an efficient and hardworking person who is good with people and able to multitask. Medical assistants have the opportunity to help patients and other medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, as an integral part of the health care team.
Since a medical assistant performs a combination of administrative and basic medical activities, it used to be more common to receive training on the job, especially at smaller medical facilities. With the advancement of technology, however, this job has become more complex. While a medical assistant still performs administrative tasks, such as answering phones, greeting patients, filing patient records, filling out insurance forms and updating patient files, this is just part of the job in most cases. A lot of medical assistants are trained in medical billing and coding. The job may require some advanced computing skills as well. Some states also require that all medical assistants are trained to take on clinical duties, such as arranging lab tests, explaining the procedures to patients, preparing exam rooms and taking vital signs.
There are certificate and diploma programs that can be completed in one year or less, and there are associate degree programs that can be completed in two years. There are even some online training programs that you can complete on your own schedule. Whichever accredited program you choose and depending on which state you live in, you will receive training in some or all of the following aspects of the medical field:
Anatomy
Medical terminology
Physiology
Various administrative tasks
Administering drugs
Diagnostic procedures
First aid
Lab techniques
Other clinical tasks
After completing one of these medical assistant programs, you may also choose to become certified by the American Association of Medical Assistants or become a registered medical assistant. This will help your job options and better prepare you for the rigors of this exciting career in the medical field.
