Wooden work benches are one of the oldest tools used by carpenters to create and design their master pieces. Great designers have put this to great use, since centuries. One such inventor and sculptor was Leonardo Da Vinci. Though he is well known for his paintings, he is equally deemed for all his ground breaking designs. He had successfully made models of weight lifting cranes, spring clocks, drilling machines, water pumps and many more.

He lived in a time where they did not even know the word ‘computer’. Thus, he had to draw the sketches and redo them several times by hand. To his aid were books, pencils, drafting board, scales and clay models. He was known to spend hours and days executing the designs he had visualized in his mind. The one place where he put all of them together was the wooden work bench. The techniques and tools of the various craftsmen over the centuries have changed and evolved, but one thing which has remained same is the wooden work bench where they put their dreams together. Even modern engineers prefer working on such a bench rather than the digital one or a computerized bench.

What makes wooden work bench so popular?
This is a common question which comes to our mind when we consider the various materials which can be used to make such a bench. One can use steel, melamine, aluminum, alloy or even synthetic wood in building such benches. The truth is that none of these can be as durable as the good old wooden work bench. Cost of a melamine bench is comparatively less and because of its light weight, it can be carried around easily. Metal benches come with surface coating which prevents scratches and damage. Although metal benches are strong, they cannot match up to the classic look and toughness of a wooden work bench. It has a grace of its own and no designer’s workshop will feel complete without it. The bench in itself is the symbol of wood work and keeps the worker connected to nature. It will surely make him feel good about the design he will be preparing.

Everyone knows that no good thing is cheap. A fine quality wooden work bench will surely cost more, but it is worth the investment. Strong and durable wood like maple, pine, mahogany, cherry, fir, walnut, oak and beech are used to craft out a solid wooden work bench. The craftsmen also like to experiment using a combination of wood to make such benches. In any case, when made out of wood, these benches acquire a special kind of grace.

Depending on the craftsman’s requirement, the design and size of the bench varies. Some people might prefer to have a plain large bench and other might include cabinets to store their tools. It surely is multipurpose equipment for a designer.
