Research In Motion's smartphones are known for their distinct feature. These are their QWERTY keyboards. These keyboards can be found on every Curve or Bold in the market. When it comes to the Torch, they still come with these keyboards. However, they can no longer be found right under the display. Since the phone is a slider, you will have to push the screen up to reveal the keys. This year, there are two more versions of RIM's BlackBerry 9800. These are the 9860 and the 9810. One is out of the ordinary. The other is conventional.
The 9810 looks exactly like the 9800. It shares exactly the same dimensions compared to its predecessor. Both versions are 111 mm in height, 62 mm in width, and 14.6 mm in thickness. Both phones weigh in at 161 grams. Upon first look, you might not know how tell each model apart.
Both successor and predecessor also sport the same screen size. The two phones sport the same 3.2 inch TFT capacitive touch screen. However, the newer version offers a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels, while the older model offers a resolution of 360 x 480 pixels.
The BlackBerry Torch 9860 is totally different. The smartphone is no longer a slider. In fact, it no longer makes use of a QWERTY keyboard. There are only four physical buttons to be found on the phone's display. It comes with a 3.7 inch TFT capacitive touch screen that offers a touch interface. This is the first handset of its kind on RIM's list of handsets.
When it comes to performance, both new versions have more to offer. One the 9800, you will find a 624 MHz single-core processor. On the BlackBerry Torch 9860 and the 9810, you will find a 1.2 GHz single-core processor under the hood. This means that RIM has given the phones twice as much processing power.
All versions sport 5 megapixel cameras. However, they come with new capabilities. On the older model, it could only record VGA-quality videos. On the two new models, you can now record videos at 720p-quality (high-definition).
The OS iteration is also different. The 9800 comes pre-installed with the BB OS 6.0. The latest versions come pre-installed with the BB OS 7.0. This is the most advanced smartphone-optimized operating system RIM currently has to offer.
If you're looking for something more conventional, then the 9810 is more for you. It you're looking for something more unique, the BlackBerry Torch 9860 is the phone that you have been looking for. Now that you know, all you have to do is choose.
