The principal types of visas in India based on purpose of travel to India are:

* Tourist Visa: Tourist visas are issued to foreign nationals who wish to vacation in India. Tourist visas may be granted for a period over six months with the provision that longest period of stay in India does not exceed six months. A person on a tourist visa should keep a minimum gap of two months between two consecutive visits to the country.

* Entry Visa: Entry visas are issued to persons of Indian origin and to his spouse and children, so that such a person, or the spouse and children can visit the country for personal purposes.

* Business Visa: Business visas are issued to people visiting India for exploring business opportunities or for conducting business or attending a business conference held by a private organisation. A person on a business visa cannot earn remuneration from an organization in India and cannot remain in India for a period exceeding six months. An application for a business visa should be enclosed with the organization’s letter, details of business, places to be visited and intention to meet expenses incurred in India.

* Student’s Visa: Student visas are granted up to five years, provided they are enclosed with registration or admission papers for study at a residential course at an officially recognized educational institution.

* Transit Visa: A transit visa is issued to enable a traveller to reach his ultimate destination by travelling through India. Transit visas are available for a transit stay of three days.

* Journalist’s Visa: Journalist’s visas are issued for three months at a time on a very selective basis to media persons who wish to make a documentary or film in India.

* Research Visa: Research visas are given to academics and participants in academic conferences. The processing time for this kind of visa is six to eight weeks.

* Sports Visa: This visa is issued on the basis of an official invite to amateur sportspeople who wish to participate at a sports event held in India.

* Conference Visa: Conference visas are issued to people who wish to attend a conference in India hosted by an Indian Government Organization.

* Employment Visa: Employment visas are issued to foreign nationals who have taken up employment in India with an organisation that’s registered in India. Employment visas require proof of employment with a company in India with annual remuneration exceeding 25000 dollars. Employment visas are granted up to one year and can be extended based on terms of the employment contract.
