Employee referral programs are no longer the simple paper driven programs of yore, where employees submitted hard copy resumes of candidates and waited for recruitment teams to get back either to the candidate or to them. They have now evolved into more complex and faster social referral programs driven more and more by online networks and social profiles. Any organization that chooses to ignore the role of social media in driving recruitment and referral by restricting access to online networks is bound to be left behind in the talent race.
Organizations looking to aggressively promote their referral program need to look at the referral program afresh to better understand how the very nature of referrals has changed to ensure their program remains relevant and effective. They need to first understand that both social media and mobile are now important drivers of the referral program. Employees need to be provided access to social media platforms which foster connections like LinkedIn to ensure that the best talent comes forward to join the organization. Moreover mobile technologies are changing the way employees work with a sizeable section of the workforce now working remotely and not necessarily from laptops. This means that if an organization wants to increase participation in the referral program, it needs to enable access to the referral program through any device.
With the widespread acceptance and popularity of employee referral program, employee expectations from the program have also increased. Employees want a referral program that is equipped with technology to filter out the most relevant candidates from their connections as well as respond in real time to their referral application.
But the biggest change in the referral program is the fact that employees are more aware than ever before. They are aware of career opportunities available within and outside the organization and not likely to refer just to earn brownie points. Organizations looking to grow their referral programs will need to take good care of their employees and ensure expectations and results are mutually aligned.
In the current scenario, the only way to get employees to play the role of brand ambassadors to attract talent is to ensure you treat them as valued and respected partners in the growth of the organization.
Employee referral programs are likely to become far more effective in 2015 as organizations start focusing efforts on inward sourcing rather than seeking external partners for recruiting.
