If you are serious about staying warm in snow, or warm in cold weather, one of the best jackets that you can buy is a down parka. Like so many things it is always better to use a natural fiber product when buying clothing like jackets, and shirts.
Natural clothes just seem to perform the best especially down clothing. That is because down is a product that comes from a bird. It in fact comes from downy feathers, feathers from the breast of a bird, most usually a duck. The feathers are very light and exhibit “loft”, known as the ability to lift itself up and create air pockets within the material. And it is the air space that provides the thermal and insulation properties that make down such a fine natural product for making the warmest jackets and clothes known to man.
However, as many people have found, a warm snugly jacket is a wonderful feeling for when it’s cold out, but it is not easy to clean. A heavyweight winter jacket is fine when it is clean, but when it is dirty and needs a little attention and care, cleaning it becomes a bit of a problem. And worst yet, if it is a personalized jacket such as an embroidered logo jacket with the embroidery on the exterior, than it becomes even more important to clean it from time to time. The thread on an embroidered jacket can become noticeably dirty, fairly quickly, making the jacket appear to be older and dirtier than it really is. This is why it is even more important to clean custom jackets on a regular basis even if it is made from a hard to wash material such as down or fleece.
So what should you do when cleaning that beautiful jacket that you have had for a while?
Well of course the initial answer is to dry clean it. A good dry cleaner, (take note, a good dry cleaner, there are some dry cleaners who are not so good), should be able to dry clean your jacket well. However for some people find this expensive and many would prefer to clean their jacket by themselves.
So if you would like to clean your own jacket the question will be, how will you do it? Well the first thing to do like with everything, you need to get it ready for cleaning. Take everything out of the pockets and shake out the “stuff” that is accumulated in the crevices and cracks. But, you do not need to pre-treat it with anything.
Next step is to wash it in a washing machine without the center spindle, or the part that is spinning to create the washing motion and agitate the water. A machine with a center spindle present can damage the down in your jacket when washing it too hard. Some people may own a machine lacking the center spindle, but older machines usually do not have it. So, you may need to use a commercial laundry where you can wash your clothes by yourself.
When washing clothes especially jackets make sure to use the gentle cycle. When the jacket is really dirty it does not even hurt to wash it with warm water on its own first, then with detergent after.
Once the gentle wash cycle has completed squeeze the water out by hand and hang your jacket out to dry. In a couple of hours the jacket will be clean and dry.
So always take care of your jackets even if they are hard to wash or personalized with logo embroidery.
