As a follow-up to its recent success the N8, Nokia is about to release the N9. This handset is certainly one of a kind in terms of its styling, but how does it shape up in terms of its specifications?
The Nokia N9 boasts a 3.9 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480x 854 pixels which will display up to 16,000,000 individual colours. Therefore, viewing photos and videos, as well as gaming and browsing the web will be an enjoyable experience. The screen itself is manufactured from gorilla glass which also has an anti-glare polariser, making the handset perfect for those who are outdoors a lot, as sunlight will not reflect from the screen too much.
At this point, it looks like there will be several variants of storage capacity available within the handset. These should range from 16 to 64 GB, which more than makes up for the lack of a microSD slot. So therefore, even the basic 16GB version will be more than comfortable with storing thousands of music tracks, videos and photos etc.
Of course, the Nokia N9 will provide a superb internet browsing experience thanks to its 14.4 megabytes per second download speeds (courtesy of an HSDPA connection) in areas with 3G coverage. Additionally, Wi-Fi Internet browsing will also be available so users can take advantage of Wireless Networks in the home or office etc.
Whilst it may not boast the same pixel count as the N8 (a whopping 12 megapixels), the Nokia N9 boasts a more than adequate 8 megapixels. This operates at a resolution of 3264x 2448 pixels and like its predecessor, features Carl Zeiss optics as well as a comprehensive software package to support the hardware; this includes Autofocus, face detection, touch focus and geo-tagging as well as a dual-LED flash to overcome the obstacle of poor lighting conditions. Naturally, the camera also supports video footage and this is in 720p quality which seems to be the standard for most camera phones these days.
One of the major differences between this and the Nokia N8 is the operating system. MeeGo OS v1.2 (aka Marmattan) rather than Symbian will be the operating system of choice. This software is already widely used in many other devices such as SatNav and PDA devices. On the surface, it looks similar to iOS in terms of its layout of applications within the interface. Some videos released by Nokia show off the interface in action, with some innovative features such as the unlock screen and customisation abilities.
It will come to no surprise to many if this phone sells well based purely on its aesthetic. It will be available in several colours, so it will please style conscious users.
Nokia has not had the most successful year, but if they continued to produce handsets like this it looks as if they could head back to the level of success they enjoyed a few years ago.
