Lord Dattatreya considered as the supreme god by all Hindus. He represents the trinity of their three main gods Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu. Dattatreya name when divided into two words has different meanings, like datta means given and the word Atreya means sage Atri.
There are various sects in Hinduism. However, Lord Dattatreya worshiped in different ways. Dattatreya worshiped as an incarnation or avatar of Shiva by the Nath tradition. In Adinath Sampradaya of the Nathas, he is also revered as the Adi-Guru or first teacher. Although his representation may vary between sects, most Hindus revere him as the supreme god rather than a teacher.
Anusuya gave birth to Dattatreya. At an early age, he left home naked searching for the absolute. He wandered in places such as North Kamataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Narmada River. He attained absolution or realization in the town Ganagapura found in North Kamataka. His original footprints believed to be found at the lonely peaks of Gimar. The disciple Parasurama was the one to find Dattatreya while meditating in the Gandhamadana Mountain.
Ordered by his Father Sage Atiri, Dattatreya made to sit by the banks of the river Gautami. Here, he prayed to Shiva and earned Brahmagyaan, which is eternal knowledge. In the song Uddhava Gita, 24 of his gurus enumerated. These are a wasp, a spider, a serpent, a blacksmith, a courtesan, a maiden, a child, an osprey, a fish, a deer, a bear, a bull elephant, a bee, a moth, the sea, pigeons, a python, the moon, the sun, fire, water, the sky, air, and earth.
Lord Dattatreya also had disciples. These were Prahlad, Ayu, Alarka, Yadu, Parasuram, Kartavirya Arjuna, and Sankruti. The first six mentioned in the Purana (ancient Hindu text). The last is mentioned in the Avadhutopanishad (79th of the 108 Upanishads of the MuktikÄ Upanishad).
Dattatreya normally seen in wallpaper pictures as a god with three heads and the three heads symbolize Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. These three represent the past, the present, and the future. They also represent destruction, preservation, and creation. Lastly, they represent dreaming, walking, and dreamless sleep.
Furthermore, if you will carefully look at his pictures Lord Dattareya often depicted meditating underneath the wish tree with a wish cow attendant. Before him is a pit or fire pit. This pit is where the sacrifice received. Surrounding Datta are four canine companions. These are deities taking the form of dogs. They also represent the four Vedas (ancient Indian literatures of Hinduism).
