Corporate team building has come a long way in the last 5 years and during that time we are seeing a shift in the type and style of team building activities and team building games on offer.
Once upon a time, companies would often choose a more structured and theory based team building program such as personality profiling and other testing type procedures.
Whilst these are still very effective tools and commonly used today, the response to these styles of programs can often be quite negative and difficult to encourage the participation required for an effective result.
Although this perception may be mistaken it is a reality and it has resulted in organisations having to source alternative methods and styles of team building programs that will be more widely accepted.
Companies have discovered that a program which can offer specific learning’s and skill building, but at the same time keep it light, fun and interactive will be more likely to be welcomed on an on-going basis and have a more realistic outcome that can be taken back into the workplace.
A common mistake made by a large number of organisations is a lack of focus or focus in the wrong direction. Although personality profiling and some of those other theory based programs will assist you to learn more about each individual, it isn’t always the best option to help you understand how that individual operates in a team environment and in particular the team they are currently a part of.
By using more interactive and recreational based activities and games, you will be able to see first hand how each individual receives a task, assesses what’s required, forms a strategy, communicates that strategy with the rest of the team, follows through to complete the task and finally reviews the result with regards to what worked, what didn’t and how it could be done differently.
These sorts of activities are in real time and real life, you will observe the leaders and the followers. You will learn about skills and attributes that particular people have that they may not be using to their potential or may not be able to use to their potential based on their position within the company and their team.
Most importantly, these recreational activities and games are structured in such a way that it will be very easy for all participants to self-assess the result and take some of those learning’s back into the workplace to be incorporated.
If you are looking for a recreational style activity for your team, I would suggest using a professional team building company such as Total Team Building, who have a number of these programs on offer.
