Sore throat refers to the inflammation of the pharynx or back of the throat. A Sore throat is often a symptom of common cold, cough or influenza caused by viral infections. Besides viral infection, a sore throat can also occur due to many other reasons such as tonsillitis, sinusitis, measles, mumps, diphtheria, allergy, excessive smoking, screeching and shouting and exposure to environmental pollutants.
Sore throat, although not a serious condition, needs to be treated quickly as it causes a lot of discomfort. Here are 10 effective home remedies for sore throat that you may want to try today!
1. Gargle with warm salt wate. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of coarse salt with 3 to 4 ounces of water. Gargle the salt mixture into the back of your throat then spit out. Repeat two to three times each day when you have a sore throat. This will soothe your throat and clear it of mucus.
2. Honey and Lemon Juice
Squeeze the juice out of a lemon into a cup of hot water, and add honey to make it less sour. Drink this up to 4 cups a day for sore throat relief. The honey coats and soothes your throat, and the lemon helps cut mucus.
3. Suck on a throat lozenge or hard candy. This isn't necessarily soothing in itself, but it does stimulate saliva production, which bathes and cleanses your throat.
4. Lemon, Apple Cider Vinegar, Cayenne, and Honey Tea. It is made by adding one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper, the juice of 1/4 lemon, and one teaspoon of honey to a cup of hot water. Stir well before drinking. Have this mixture 4 times in a day.
5. Avoid exposure to chemicals or irritants such as cigarette smoke and alcohol vapors. Smoke irritates a sore throat. At least while you're sick, stop smoking and avoid all fumes from household cleaners and paint. And don't expose children to secondhand smoke.
6. Do not eat cold or refrigerated food items when there is a throat infection. This will make the sore throat so severe that even swallowing food and breathing might become difficult.
7. Chamomile tea - add 1 or 2 teaspoons of dried chamomile blossoms to a pint of boiling water. Let them steep well and then strain the water. Have a cup of this decoction, every few hours, during sore throat.
8. Rest your voice. If your sore throat has affected your voice box (larynx), talking may lead to more irritation and temporary loss of your voice (laryngitis).
9. Cut an onion, put in a cup with a top, soak with honey (2 centimeters over), cover the top and leave for one hour, swallow 1 spoon of the honey every few hours.
10. The most effective way to cure sore throat would be to mix 4 cloves of garlic, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne and mix them together. Have 1 teaspoon of this mixture, everyday, during sore throat. Make sure to chew it well, before swallowing.
