Self tanning has become an almost essential fashion trend to many young women, as we strive to emulate the bronzed and healthy complexions of the celebrities and role models appearing in our magazines and on our television screens, our cupboards are full of fake tan lotions and formulas. However, it wasn’t always this way.
During the Victorian era and up until around the 1920’s, having tanned skin was undesirable, being associated with the outdoor work of those in the lower classes. Women and men would often apply lead based products in order to artificially whiten their skin. Other methods of maintaining a pale complexion included avoiding exposure to sunlight, wearing full length clothing outside and using parasols. In the early 1920’s, Coco Chanel reputedly got burnt whilst holidaying on the French Riviera. Her adoring fans loved her darker skin tone, and started to try to replicate it an attempt to echo both Chanel’s lifestyle and status; all of a sudden, tanned skin became fashionable, healthy and luxurious, much as it is today!
Reality TV shows such as The Only Way Is Essex, Made In Chelsea and Geordie Shore all have contributed to the recent spike in popularity of self tanning products. The majority of stars from The Only Way Is Essex showcase a high-maintenance look that continues to flaunt fake tan as the easy route to looking picture perfect, all day, every day, and watchers are starting to catch on to the trend fast. With the recent release of new reality show Desperate Scousewives, it would appear that the fake tan trend is going nowhere fast in the foreseeable future.
Safer than sitting for hours in the sun or tanning salon beds, fake tan creates the desired look without long term skin damage or negative health effects. Considered by many as the essential choice over sun beds, fake tan products have shaken off any old fashioned opinions and are becoming a hugely lucrative business. This benefits aspiring tanners, as the range and quality of self tanning products available is ever growing and improving, with more tanning lotions available for different skin types and shade, getting the natural look is becoming easier than ever.
