There is much truth in the observation made by some, that employee referral programs are changing exponentially from what they were some time back. No longer are referral programs simply a means of hiring talent, their scope and impact has widened way beyond to include aspects like employer branding as well as talent engagement and retention. The biggest contributor to this change has no doubt been the advent of social media and the speed and ease with which it has become a part of everyone’s everyday life.
Social media has festered a whole new generation of people to stay connected to each other even without physically meeting. It has eroded distances to make it possible for a person staying in one part of the world to stay connected with friends and familythe other part with no effort or expense involved on either side. All you need is an internet connection and you can know all about what is happening in the life of others, far and near.
Social media has changed the way employee referrals are made, so much so that more hiring now happens through social media than through any other channels. Employee connections on social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and the like have become a virtual goldmine of candidate database for organizations. But accessing this candidate goldmine needs some organizational investment.
Traditionally organizations have not favored allowing employee’s access to social media at the workplace due to possibility of misuse. But with the change in referral landscape, more and more organizations are enabling social media features within their employee referral program. This allows employees to share job openings directly from the referral tool with their social media connections as well as upload directly from social sites onto the referral platform. Gone are the days when employees needed to email postings to people they were looking to refer and then seek profiles from them in up loadable format.
The advent of social media in referral programs has also made communication more important than ever. Not only is internal communication to employees regarding the referral program important, external communication has also become extremely important. Organizations need to keep uploading fresh content on social media which can be shared by employees with their connections and so on. This helps keep the organization in focus on social media and generates the pull factor for hiring.
Employee referral programs now work faster and have the potential to generate referrals not just from employees, but their connections as well. The change in employee referral programs has been transformational and organizations that have adopted the changes have found hiring to be easier and faster.
