The global plastics industry which is gradually recovering from the heavy recession in the financial crisis is going to play an important role in the future development of the industry. Though badly influenced by the economic recession, the manufacturers in the developed countries are enhancing competence through disposing of the low-quality assets, renovating or setting up devices. Besides, the strength of the manufactures in north America are enhancing with the low cost raw material, ethane.
According to statistics, in 2009 plastics consumption has reached around 176 million tons, far more than the that of 2008, among which high-density polyethylene (HDPE) takes up 17%, linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) 11%, low density polyethylene (LDPE) 10% polypropylene (PP) 25%, polyvinyl chloride (PVC ) 18%, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) 8% polystyrene (PS) 6%, ABS (4%), and polycarbonate (PC) 2%.
In the field of engineering plastics, the growing fast demand in the PC and ABS market is attributed to the stimulation from the market in the developing countries. In the next five years, the average annual growth rate of the PC in the world will be 5.8% with the demand of over 4.4 million tons by 2015. It is reported that the PC growth rate are highest in the automotive glass industry. At the same time, the Step analysis in the United States also say that the application of the PC in the electrical and electronic industry is promising and the market is expected to become the largest application fields of PTFE rod in the 2015 with the emerging economies as the main driving force.
Global ABS market is expected to grow at the average speed at 5% annually in the next five years, higher than the global GDP growth rate. The fastest growing fields of the ABS is the transportation and appliance market which is expected to grow at the speed of more than 5% annually, remaining the largest application field in the 2015.
In addition, it is also said in the report of analysis step that, in the next few years, the future of the European and American plastics market is promising with higher manufacturer's competence, slightly tight supply and high operating rate of device. Some manufacturers are committed to improving the efficiency and producing special products such as Ptfe film, and rationalizing the transformation of the high-cost device.
According to statistics from the American Chemical Council, in 2009, the exportation of PE in the United States hit a new high and remains this momentum in 2010. In 2009, the plastics products from the United States mainly export to China. However, in 2010 the United States turns to export those products to the Canada and Mexico. Though the Middle East's products is quite competitive, with the low-cost ethane as raw materials as the raw material and several export opportunities, the manufacturers in the north America will not be threaten by the imports from the Middle East.
Moreover, demand for PVC in the non-construction related field of the United States has begun to recover and will enjoy rather rapid growth in 2010, while still well below the level from the year 2006 to 2007. In the next five years, the growth rate of the demand for PS in the north America and the Europe will be 1.5% to 1.7%.
However the Teflon film producers will face an oversupply of the market with low demand for PET in the future.
