The Kentucky Derby observed a fourth finish from the star, the trend always catching Shackleford, him running out of gas by the time he reaches the wire. Preakness witnessed a more determined Shackleford, the lead and Flashpoint, fellow-lead had slowed down the pace in the backstretch but as they approached the home stretch, Shackleford accelerated upon being whipped by Castanon and prevailed on a win by half a length on Derby winner Animal Kingdom. The Belmont Stakes again saw the fading off Shackleford, the lead towards the home stretch was overtaken by race winner Ruler on Ice, Stay Thirsty along with Nehro and Brilliant Speed.
