Sometimes, you can’t focus on just your cigar. You might be mowing the lawn, golfing, or just thinking about a thousand other things at the same time. But that doesn’t mean you have to feel guilty about not giving the cigar your full attention. This is, of course, not the time for your premium (i.e. expensive) stogies; but just because you’re busy doesn’t mean you have to stop smoking!

Now yes, most of the time it is true that you get what you pay for when it comes to cigars. But if you look in the right places, you’ll find a trove of surprisingly fulfilling cigars that are also quite affordable. Sure, the less expensive ones might more likely be less complex but you should never opt for a cigar that’s going to taste like you just licked a tailpipe simply because it’s super cheap. Not all inexpensive cigars gyp you on experience, though!
As a starting point, here’s my list of great everyday cigars—ones that won’t leave you feeling guilty that you didn’t nub it.
Perdomo Slow Aged 826 – Quite a complex cigar for its price! Earthy in tone, this medium stick has just a little bit more than a hint of spice. And wait, this cigar is less than 3 bucks?! I’ll take it! Nick Perdomo puts his name on some pretty worthy stogies, and these really hit the mark.
Oliva Flor de Oliva – Fairly mild yes, but that doesn’t mean boring. The name should tell you that these cigars might be quite promising. These guys are pretty complex in flavor and just a shade over $2 a stick, so you certainly can’t go wrong with some of these in your stash.
Padilla Hybrid – Mild/medium cigar with a great burn, smooth draw and nice flavor profiles. And get this—only $2 a piece! Obviously the highly respected Padilla operation could make such a wonderful stogie, but at this low a price point and with such a great construction? Quite a triumph. Also, it provides you with a fulfilling, guilt-free experience with a fairly quick smoking time.
Cu-Avana Toro – Made by Manuel Quesada. A medium bodied and hand-rolled blend with hints of spice and citrus. The coffee overtone makes this one a great addition to your humidor as it is quite delicious. These burn rather nicely and are constructed well. For only $3 a stick, I find that this one ends up in my travel humidor before I head off to play 18 holes.
Rocky Patel Vintage 2nds – Let’s first clear up the meaning behind what makes a second a second. There isn’t a crazy blend change that makes one cigar taste like Windex and another like cedar. The issue with these is solely in their appearance. When workers in quality control at Rocky Patel find a cigar with a slight (perhaps unappealing) blemish they pull it aside and label it a 2nd. I bet you that if you were blindfolded and smoked a bunch of both types that you’d be hard-pressed to figure out which one is which. That makes these perfect for everyday smoking because the only issue is the flawed look; they still come packed with great flavors. And the best part—they’re only $2.50 a piece! You can thank me later…
This list isn’t meant to advocate totally removing yourself from super premium cigars. We all know what wonderful experiences you can have with those. This is simply a list of “faithful friends” (as I like to call them) who are there for you when you need them. If you don’t like trial and error (you’ll find a lot of poor quality options when searching in the pool of less expensive stogies) I definitely recommend you try some of these guys. You’ll be surprised, I promise!
