The Pacific Classic - One of the Most Prestigious Races

Extremely prestigious and remarkable in racing history is the Pacific Classic scheduled from August 28th this year. Started recently in 1991, the event is a classic 1 ¼ mile run with a heavy impressive purse of $1,000,000. Already on the radar of many aspirers, the race is one of the most coveted and reputed for all racing family.
The Pacific Classic was run first in 1991, so compared to historic races such as the Travers Stakes, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont, it has a relatively short history. Nonetheless, it has quickly become one of the premier races, and is the centerpiece of the summer Del Mar meet.

Trainers, jockeys, and owners are known to covet a win the Pacific Classic and are often heard saying that it is one of the goals of their career. Rarely do you hear horsemen saying that one of their career goals is to win the Super Derby, though it is a very important race at Louisiana Downs.

The Pacific Classic is a Grade 1 event run at the classic distance of 1 ¼ miles, and is open to 3-year olds and upwards, both male and female. Not only is their great prestige in winning the race, but the prize money is one of the more generous purses in North America, the purse being $1,000,000.

The Pacific Classic is really to Del Mar, what the Santa Anita Handicap is to the Santa Anita meet, and what the Hollywood Gold Cup is to the Hollywood Park meet.

Some of the great horses to win the Pacific Classic include Bertrando in 1993, who ran an outstanding time of 159.55.

Remarkably, three different horses have won back to back Pacific Classics, the first being Tinners Way who accomplished the feat in 1994 and 1995, running sub 2 minute races in both years. The next horse to win consecutive Classics was Skimming who was a noted Del Mar track specialist, and he did it in both 2000 and 2001. Bobby Frankel has had remarkable success in this race, winning four of the first five runnings, including four consecutive ending with the aforementioned Tinners Way in 1995. He also trained the aforementioned Skimming, whose back to back victories gave him a total of six Pacific Classic wins in the first eleven runnings.
Richard’s Kid also won back to back runnings in 2009 and 2010 and is currently the defending champ.

Perhaps the most remarkable running of the Pacific Classic came in 2003. A talented horse from Argentina under the charge of Ron McAnally named Candy Ride was quickly making a name for himself in the Southern California circuit having won a debut allowance race at Hollywood Park with ease and then going on to take the Grade 2 American Handicap defeating a talented grass runner Special Ring over the Hollywood Park turf course. This remarkable horse had begun his racing career in Argentina in which he was undefeated three for three, winning his debut on the dirt by eight lengths, and then went on to win two Group 1 events on the turf, dominating by eight lengths each.

When it came time for the Pacific Classic, he would face two formidable rivals in Milwaukee Brew, who had won the Santa Anita Handicap twice, and the top older horse at that time, Medaglia d’Oro. No one knew for sure how good Candy Ride was as he had won both of his starts in the U.S. with ease and it was clear the jockey had not got to the bottom of him. How would he far against these two multiple Grade 1 winners? We got our answer as they turned into the stretch as Medaglia d’Oro led, but track announcer Trevor Denman observed that Candy Ride’s jockey Julie Krone was loaded and ready to explode whenever she needed it. She shook the reins at him just a bit and he inhaled Medaglia d’Oro in mid-stretch, and proceeded to draw off easily in a track record time for 1¼ miles on dirt of 1:59:11, winning by 3 ¼ lengths, and earning the top Beyer of the year, a figure of 123.

Other great horses such as Lava Man and 2003 Breeder’s Cup Classic winner Pleasantly Perfect have taken this important race, and as long as great horses continue to compete here, it will continue to maintain its reputation as one of the most coveted races in horse racing.

The 2011 edition of the Pacific Classic will be run on August 28, 2011.
