When Roald Dahl introduced the world to Oompa Loompas in his famous novel Willy Wonka and the Chocolate and the Factory, the pygmies were better known for their witty rhymes than for their style of dress. Dahl’s limited physical descriptions of the Oompa Loompas left readers with little but their imaginations to envision them and few, if any, considered their socks.
In 1967, when Oompa Loompas hit the big screen in living color, it suddenly became clear that someone had in fact contemplated their footwear. Wonka’s pint-sized candy-makers made their visual debut with avocado green hair, bright orange skin, white overalls, and of course their iconic brown and white striped socks. The socks’ color combination paired the pristine white of a spotless worker with the warm chocolate brown of the unforgettable chocolate river Oompa Loompas ferried Wonka’s honored guests across.
Striped socks were not new in cinema, especially not in children’s fantasy stories. In 1939, The Wizard of Oz was released in theaters across the nation, introducing America to similar striped socked shorties, the munchkins. Even the Wicked Witch of the East was shown with striped socks as her feet curled under and disappeared beneath Dorothy’s fallen house. But in grey and muted green, the guild’s striped socks took a backseat to the towering hats, dramatically swirling mustaches, and the full spectrum of color that characterized the munchkins’ wardrobes. Their striped socks were more subtle, as were the witch’s, types of striped sock we might see today in an every-day ensemble.
The Oompa Loompas, on the other hand, were something entirely different. Their crisp, vibrant striped socks took their presence on screen to a whole new level. They tied the Oompa Loompa’s image together perfectly. Even today, these brown striped socks are an indispensable ingredient for any Oompa Loompa costume both as knee socks and over the knee socks. But you don’t need to be four feet tall or have a color palette of green and orange to add brown and white striped socks. In fact, brown and white striped socks can do for people what they do for Oompa Loompas without giving someone so much as a resemblance to the minature characters. Brown and white striped socks can pull your outfit together or add a little spice right where you just might need it.
