It’s been a long time since the BPO business in India has established itself. For most people, this means jobs that are found in call centre and this meaning was ingrained in the minds for a long period of time. Now the concept has changed in the minds while that in terms of business, it has grown to huge proportions and has established itself as the largest sector in the country.
The huge numbers of jobs and career opportunities that are provided by the BPO sectors is in itself an achievement. Imagine the hundreds of people, especially the youth, all crammed up in single large halls otherwise termed as offices. From here, many people in their early 20s or even late teens have earned money, pocketing them to further their study aspirations. In no way, the BPO jobs were anything but career saving.
For the ambitious and the adventurous, the BPO jobs provided the right platform to establish themselves in more affluent companies in better careers. Some were even able to carve their way into foreign countries and multinational companies. Those who stuck to it have reached to bigger positions in the echelons of the BPO corridor, donning the roles of system process managers, chief operations officers and such other high posts. Few people, who couldn’t make their way through the pressures of this corridor, stepped down and forgot about the BPO jobs.
But still today, the BPO jobs remains a step towards more ambitious goals and thousands are joining in these processing outsourcing companies. Also, adding to the flurry of jobs is the entry of diverse branches of processing business. The start of the BPO culture was with the introduction of a few works like customer support and technical support.
Now, a plethora of functions are being handled by such offshore companies which includes works like human resources functions, employee benefits management, financial and administration processes, accounting and legal activities, payroll, and knowledge based processes. These are works that are nowadays done by the BPO companies and a pretty good share of these works is coming from Indian companies also.
Thus the work distribution is among a larger number of employees, thus making it necessary to work in a broader spectrum of activities. These works have also helped a lot in clearing away the tag of call centres that was branded to such BPO jobs. These are considered more technical in nature and therefore people with a technical skill, in the respective fields are being picked up for the BPO jobs.
Earlier when the required qualification was a graduation or ability to speak and write in English, nowadays people with management skills, knowledge in specific fields are being recruited. For example, the legal process outsourcing work requires people with a legal knowledge in their kitty. For those interested in medical transcription work, a bit of training in the medical curriculum and terminologies are a must. With people ready to acquire such knowledge in short courses, it is not surprising that the BPO jobs are growing out to be potentially rewarding. And people are warming up to the idea of doing something more than the call centre jobs.
