It’s a big relief to most parents when they manage to get their child a seat in a good nursery school. After all, it came at a price ! Whether its been sleepless nights, or endless hours of coaching or even learning English at the last minute themselves, they are happy to see light at the end of the tunnel especially if they have undergone the journey of the admission procedure with their children through the dark tunnel!. Though, the glamour of being admitted into a prestigious nursery has its own sparkle, it certainly is in no way the end of all woes for parents.
A number of parents must have had to pay a huge capitation fee in the process of securing a seat. Mrs. Ranjita Chopra, a parent experienced for the first time in her life how schools reacted to her admission queries. She went live on NDTV the next day!. Some schools were not even willing to refund the fees when she wanted to withdrew her child to another school after the second list was displayed. Some of the most expensive pre-schools across the country were hunted down in a survey by an educational portal. Shockingly, the result was that there was no central database to track the tuition fee pattern and neither was there any tool to make comparisons with other schools. Parents were actually worried about losing the big bucks with nursery admissions burning a deep hole in pockets.
Mrs. Ranjita Chopra, said “I approached a school for my chil’d admission and they happily demanded a cash down payment of Rs 1 lakh to book a nursery seat for her daughter but when I asked if the money was refundable if my child got admission into a school closer home, the school bluntly said it would not comply”. The directorate of education seemed to favor the parents. "If any parent or guardian deposits the full fee for admission and then after a month chooses to withdraw the child, then the school may retain the registration charges, admission fee and the tuition fee for one month only. The remaining amount has to be refunded to the parent." Mr. Kumar in all his anger filed an RTI against a school that forced him to pay an extra fee under the category of Special fee without issuing a receipt for it.
Mr. Kumar was keen to know what to do when an additional amount of Rs 40,000 apart from the main school fee which was Rs 21,000. Mrs. Boselike Mr. Kumar, did not get a receipt, despite having paid cash down. There were other parents like Mr. Gyandeep who was very disturbed and didn’t want his child to study in a school that charged a heavy amount apart from the fee because he felt the schools were just as responsible for the child’s education as they were as parents and ought to be transparent in its transactions. It was ironic to have schools teach their children about good moals when they themselves showed parents the worst side when it came to school admissions!.
