There are some kinds of jobs that everyone assumes are dangerous, like being a fireman or working on a bomb squad. Some job dangers are a bit more surprising, however. Did you know that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics almost half of all workplace injuries involved people in jobs that were just collecting and moving things? Read on for a few of the most dangerous jobs in the world, and why they made the list.
Truck Drivers
Motor vehicle accidents top the list of U.S. accidental fatalities until the age range gets into the 70's, so it's no surprise that truck driver is high on the list of dangerous jobs. Truck drivers spend the vast majority of their time on the road without nearly enough rest to keep going day after day. To make things worse, those double and triple trailer trucks you see on the road in some states create a giant, difficult to stop death trap waiting to happen every time a truck driver accidentally starts going a little bit too fast.
Power Line Installation And Repair
These are the only people who are actually supposed to climb up to the top of those power line poles and start messing with stuff. When you combine electricity and dangerous heights, it's not particularly surprising that stuff goes wrong once in awhile. There are a lot of mistakes in any profession involving electrical systems that can really only happen once.
Farmers and Ranchers
Living on a farm may sound idyllic, but it's actually pretty dangerous. Not only do farmers deal with unpredictable and dangerous animals, they also have to worry about a large selection of machines that look like they were designed with the specific purpose of mowing down large crops of people instead of corn. The standard workplace fatality rate supplied by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is 3.9 deaths for every 100,000 people. Farmers come in at almost ten times that.
Loggers
Logging has topped the statistical dangerous job list for many years. Being a logger involves working with giant falling objects that can occasionally be unpredictable no matter what you do every day, so it's not a particularly big stretch to assume sometimes somebody gets hit by a tree. Logging is also one of the few jobs out there that involves the regular use of gas powered chainsaws and other very sharp power tools far away from the nearest emergency room.
Fishermen
Fishermen get to be at the very top of the dangerous jobs list, with over 100 deaths per 100,000 workers in a good year. Not only do fishermen have to cope with some of the most unpredictable and dangerous weather patterns in the world, they get to do it stuck on a ship out of reach of help. They are also far from help if something goes wrong with one of the many extremely dangerous powered tools that fishermen have to use to do their job. The ocean is apparently a very dangerous place.
