There is no doubt about it, every housewife, college student, single man, and overworked career woman will agree that the microwave is probably one of the single greatest inventions of the civilized world. It enables us to reheat dinner in 2 minutes flat, prepare breakfast in minutes, defrost a chicken or cook specially designed microwave meals with little or no effort at all. Very few people in the world today can imagine life before a microwave oven.
The creator of the microwave oven is not even famous; few of us would even know his name. Percy L Spencer invented the microwave by accident shortly at the end of World War II. In 1945 he was trying to invent a magnetron for Britain’s Radar Systems and found that they caused the chocolate in his pocket to melt. When he held a bag of un-popped corn next to it, he soon found that the kernels were popping all over. From this experiment Spencer and his colleague Raytheon invented the microwave.
The first microwave was a monolithic piece weighing 750 pounds and measuring 5 feet, 6 inches, larger than most refrigerators. Now, how would you like that in your kitchen? The first microwaves were used exclusively in restaurants and hotels as they were too big and expensive to be used anywhere else.
It took almost 30 years to develop the technology that would allow microwaves to be housed in almost every home around the country and be affordable enough for the average American. Today every dorm room is equipped with a microwave oven; it is almost the first item to go on the list when shopping for a new home or kitchen.
Despite its drawbacks when it comes to cooking certain foods, like roasting meat and French fries, the popularity of the microwave has only increased as newer, sleeker and more powerful models are available at lower prices. Inventive chefs around the world have prepared entire cookbooks, describing and modifying meals that can now be cooked in the microwave in half the time and with half the effort it would take to prepare the original.
Complimentary products like microwave safe dishes and cookware have been developed earning millions for these inventors. And that is along with companies that spend thousands of dollars developing ready to cook microwave meals. You can have a delicious nutritious meal in minutes; all you need to do is peel off the foil and set the timer. No more hours spent peeling potatoes, chopping vegetables or boiling rice. Truly a boon for people who are always on the run and in a hurry.
It is interesting to note that as among one of the 100 inventions that have shaped world history – the humble microwave is also one of the top 50 inventions discovered by mistake. All we can say is, it’s a very good thing for the world that Mr. Spencer walked around his laboratory carrying a bar of chocolate else perhaps the invention of the microwave oven would not have been there till many years later.
