When we think about hygiene, most of us think of clean and fresh food. But nobody thinks that if we don’t keep our environment clean eating fresh food won’t really help. When it comes to schools, hygiene can be maintained by providing fresh food to the students in the canteens and keeping dustbins all around the school premises. In fact, students should be taught by their teachers how and why to use dustbins. They should teach the children from an early that wrappers or any kind of waste should not be thrown around the school.
The reasons are, firstly it does not look good when wastes are thrown just in front of the classrooms or anywhere within the school premises and secondly and most importantly it is not good in the sense of maintaining hygiene because the immune system of children are not as strong as adults. They may fall sick anytime if they play about in the vicinity of these wastes. And, to keep diseases away use of dustbin in the schools is a must. Dustbins are containers that used for storing waste temporarily and are usually made of plastic or metal. Other terms that are commonly used for dustbin are, rubbish bin, waste container, garbage can, refuse bin, dumpster, litter bin, wheelie bin, waste basket, trash can, waste receptacle, trash barrel, kitchen bin, trash bin, litter receptacle, skip, container bin, waste paper basket and bin. But we use the terms trash, basket, garbage and can usually when we use American English while speaking.
Dustbins are in use since the last 150 years. Before that people were really not very aware of dustbins and even if they were aware, they never found the necessity of using a dustbin. People mostly use to throw away waste were ash of wood, body waste, bones and vegetable matter. And, these were mostly burned in the fire place. The need for dustbins came in the picture during the industrial revolution where consumable items were purchased and the use of plastic and other materials was increasing. People started feeling the need of keeping their towns and cities clean. The government for the first time in 1848 Public Health Act decided that every household should have at least a dustbin which was emptied by the binmen who were funded by the state.
Dustbins had been introduced by many of the councils. Earlier the dustbins were made of metal and were large containers. Many of them haven’t changed yet and the shape and design are quite the same for many decades. In the present day scenario, the use of dustbins is in wide use. We can find dustbins in every place we go. People have become really aware of keeping their surroundings clean. Moreover, in the context of schools, now almost every school has started keeping dustbins. Keeping dustbins in the schools not only keep the surroundings clean but also makes the students learn good habits of discipline.
