About two hundred years ago, nobody could imagine mechanical devices running on electricity walking and talking like human beings and doing all the work as good as humans can do, if not better. The visionaries who dreamt of building such devices were laughed at and their designs and suggestions were not taken into serious consideration. Nobody could imagine that a day will come when satellites would be manned by such devices; biped mechanical creatures would help doctors to operate on patients; these devices would have Olympic games organized just for their participations and they will spawn a whole new field of studies that will have the world of scholars, scientists and the student community hooked to it.
Welcome to the fascinating world of robotics, where impossible is nothing; where you have robots designed to work in heavy industries in place of man performing all the tedious and difficult duties with great results; where doctors rely on robots during operations or treatments of patients; where spacecrafts are left in care of these bots etc. From military technologies, to space explorations, from medical studies to commerce or education, robots have made their mark everywhere and still continue to do so. Robots can perform various tasks which human beings consider to be tedious and difficult as well. There are robots which can deal with various harmful radioactive and nuclear chemicals/devices. Robots have recently been used to explore inside human blood vessels to detect any clot and subsequently remove it. Researches are going on worldwide in renowned labs and universities to bring about revolutionary changes in the field of robotics and small miracles are created almost on a daily basis. Such is the great potential of robotics that many companies have come forward to build robots commercially in association with labs. People have been buying bots for various purposes, domestic, industrial or research. There have been robot fairs, exhibitions too.
What is a robot? It is defined as a mechanical device which is capable of interacting with its ambience. It contains various sensors with which it can detect changes in the environment which send this data as feedback helping it to act accordingly.
Microcontrollers form an integral part of robot construction. Designed solely for embedded systems, these electronic devices are computers designed on single integrated circuits with a memory, processor and programmable input and output peripherals. These are preprogrammed and can interact with other hardware devices which are the main controllers for robots needing intelligent automaton.
The internet contains microcontroller tutorial which robotics hobbyists can download to program their chips. Many websites are dedicated solely to explaining 8051 tutorial and also C for microcontrollers which are needed to program the device. You need to learn Embedded C or C for microcontrollers as it is popularly called for this purpose. Study the 8051 tutorial carefully, go through the datasheet to know the 8 pins and their purposes, the power requirement, the memory and other details. There are excellent robotics websites with forums available in the internet where you can ask questions and also share your views and get tips, suggestions etc.
Apart from knowing about building the chassis, motors, power supply, sensors, people must learn microcontroller programming to build a robot.
