Oscar Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris. He was the pioneer of impressionist painting that became quite popular with other artistes of the world. His parents were Claude Monet Adolphe and Louise Justin Monet Aubree. His parents used to call him Oscar. After a few years, his family left Paris and went to Normandy. His parents wanted him to continue with the family business of grocery shop, but Oscar had different plans and aptitude. He began painting in the open because he was destined to be a painter. Though his father was nowhere related to the world of art, his mother was a singer.

He met an artist Eugene Boudin at the art school at Le Havre art school. Boudin later became his mentor. He taught Monet oil painting and also outdoor painting. In fact he had kindled the desire in Claude Monet to paint in the outdoors. He lost his mother quite early in life. He didn’t finish his school and moved to live with his aunt who had no children.

Later on Monet came to Paris and entered Swiss Academy. In the year 1860 he met Picasso. In 1864 he stayed with Boudin, Bazille and Jondkind, and in the same year he came across his art lover Gaudibert. Hi 1868 Monet tried to commit suicide. Later on he received pension from Gaudibert. Monet married Camille. After some time when war broke out, they took refuge in London. In 1871 Monet met Durand Ruel in London. In 1874 his painting sunrise was exhibited.

His Paintings

In 1874 Monet painted Impression or sunrise in the studio of Nadar. In 1877, he painted Saint-Lazare station. In 1889 Monet exhibited his paintings with Rodin. In 1891 he painted Meules (haystack) Peupliers. In 1892 he painted Rouen Cathedral series. In the same year he married Alice. In 1900 he painted Japanese bridge displaying its various views. Later he visited London and painted the Thames. In 1916 Monet builds a studio that was large at Giverny. He worked on a project for a long time. It was named The Water Lilies. Monet donated them to France. These paintings were installed in a place especially kept for them at the museum of Orangerie in Paris. Monet died of lung cancer.

A difficult later life

After the death of his wife Camille, he was grief stricken. He was in absolute poverty and he wanted to get out of it. He took a vow to paint with such alacrity that he would never be immersed in poverty. In the 1880s Monet painted many landscapes and seascapes. In 1878 the Monets moved to a different home of Ernest Hoschede who was a businessman. He had a departmental store and he liked Monet’s paintings. He became his patron for some time.

Giverny deserves a special place in the biography of Monet because here at the beginning of 1883 Monet rented a house with an adjacent large tract of land. There was a barn that served as a studio, an orchard and a garden. The natural surrounding gave Monet much inspiration to paint many of his famous works. His dealer of paintings was Paul Durand Ruel who sold his paintings successfully and so Monet’s financial fortune turned for the better. One of Monet’s favorite series of paintings was putting the subject in different lights and shades. It gave his painting a new look, a new meaning. Monet never copied the old masters. He painted the objects as he saw them. He painted his own garden, pond and bridges. He painted a series of paintings in Venice also which were later widely appreciated. One of his well-known works has been Break-up of the ice on the Seine. He would instruct his gardener to plant the trees and shrubs in a particular formation. During the world war I, Monet painted a series of ‘weeping willows.’

Monet died of lung cancer when he was 86. He was buried in the cemetery of a church in Giverny.
