A son of a great Pandava brother, Barbareek was a courageous warrior. His mother taught him the art of fighting from an early age. Pleased with his fighting skills, Lord Shiva bestowed upon him three powerful arrows. The fire god Agni Dev bestowed upon him a godly bow.

The legend of khatushyamji was mark by a war waging between the Kauravas and the Pandavas. Barbareek wanted to fight in war. However, the great warrior promised his mother that he would join the losing side. Riding on a blue horse Leela Ghora, he rode towards the battle but disguised as a Brahmin, then Lord Krishna brought Barbareek to a halt to test his prowess in battle.

Lord Krishna challenged the warrior to tie the peepal tree leaves underneath him. The warrior accepted the challenge and used one arrow to tie the leaves together. However, the god hid a leaf under his foot. This made the arrow circle his foot. He then asked whom the boy favored in the war. Barbareek replied that he would join the losing side. The god foresaw the defeat of the Kauravas. If the boy joined them, he would turn the tide.

Furthermore, the Brahmin demanded charity from the warrior. Barbareek promised to grant his wish. The god demanded the boy's head as an offering. This shocked Barbareek, but agreed. He then requested that the Brahmin reveal his identity and then revealed himself.

In return, the warrior requested to view the battle. Krishna agreed. After giving his head, the head placed on top of a hill close to the battlefield. This allowed Barbareek to watch the war to the end.
In the end, the Pandavas won the battle. They questioned who was responsible for their victory. Krishna told them that the great warrior witnessed the entire battle. The boy stated, Krishna was responsible for the victory.

The god was pleased with the warrior boy's sacrifice. He granted the warrior boon upon the decent of Kaliyug and because of this, people would worship him in the form of Shyam. All his devotees had to do was solemnly pronounce his name to receive his blessings.

The warrior head then buried in the village Khatu. When a cow wandered over the spot, milk started to flow from the cow. Due to this fact, the spot exhumed and Barbareek's head revealed. The warrior's head given to the Brahmin and was revered for numerous days. Khatu's king had an inspiring dream to build a temple and place the head on its altar. So, the temple was built and the head was placed in the temple.
