The job outlook for beauty careers continues to be very positive, at least for most professions within this field. The best opportunities appear to be in hairstyling and esthetician areas. The only beauty-related trade that is growing at a slow pace is barbering, mostly because many hairstylists cut both men’s and women’s hair.
While some men still love going to the barber, others just go to a local salon that serves both men and women. If you are currently in cosmetology school, there will be many opportunities waiting for you when you’re done.
The best job opportunities for beauty professionals are in the upscale salons in affluent areas, of course, but the competition is fierce for these jobs. Many people start out working in the bargain salons and after many years of experience they may be able to move into the more upscale places, especially if they have a diverse range of skills. Most beauty jobs are in beauty salons, hair salons and barber shops, although there are also jobs in cosmetic stores, day spas, department stores, drug stores, nail salons, resorts and even retirement homes. About half of all cosmetologists are self-employed, though, which means they own their own salon or work from home.
The average hair stylist may earn as much as $40,000, but many hair stylists earn less than $12,000 a year because they work part time. Very successful hair stylists who own their own salons or work in very affluent, upscale places can make a lot more, but that is not the norm. Barbers make between $12,000 and $44,000 per year on average, with the middle 50 percent earning between $16,000 and $31,000, approximately. If you work as a makeup artist, manicurist or skin care specialist you will probably earn between $20,000 and $30,000 annually, but again it all depends on where you work and how many hours you put in.
The pay might not always be high, but there are going to be many job opportunities in the field of beauty in the coming years. The job outlook for beauty careers is good, and there are opportunities to excel if you’re good at what you do.
