The holy city of Nathdwara found in the Rajasthan state of west India. The city rests on the hills of Aravalli and along the banks of the Banas River. It is famous the temple of Krishna that is the house of the god Shrinathji.
Shrinatji is an infant incarnation of Krishna in the 14th century. In the 17th century, people moved the idol from Govardhan hill. This done to protect the idol from emperor Aurangzeb of Mughal and his campaign to eradicate Hindu worship from his empire.
Shri Nathdwara is the gateway to the Shrinathji. Built in the 17th century, the site of the shrine is chosen by god himself. While being transferred from Vrindaban, the wheels of the cart sank in mud and refused to budge. The priest that came along for the travel realized that the god has chosen this spot. A temple was built in the same spot soon after.
During the Janmashtami occasions and other festivalssuch as Diwali and Holi, pilgrims flock to the shrine. The shrine revered as a living deity. They bathe, dress, feed, and provide it with resting times. Since the deity is the infant form of Lord Krishna, special care given to it.
The dressing and adorning of the idol are the main attractions. It is treated like a person. It is dressed appropriately for the day and the night. Every piece of clothing is intricately woven and embroidered. Furthermore, the idol made to wear jewelry made from precious gems. Aside from formal prayers, incense sticks, diya, flowers, fruits, and other forms of offerings offered daily. The playing of local musical instruments and the singing of devotional songs accompany all this to Shrinathji. The songs and instrumentation appropriately selected for the occasion. The removal of the curtain to view the idol is definitely a sight to marvel at every day.
The city of Nathdwara is a small city but culturally rich city that surrounds the temple. The city made famous by the Pichwai Paintings. These paintings depict Shri Krishna at the center of various godly scenarios. He is seen doing godly deeds and dancing. The god is distinctly recognizable using a predominantly pure gold color. Since taking pictures of the shrine is prohibited therefore the various forms of artwork made by local artists are always in demand. This is the holy city of Nathdwara.
