Just a short trip from Kona International Airport lies Kailua Village. At one time, this area was a quiet fishing village and place of relaxation for Hawaiian royalty, but Americanization has transformed the village into a shopping, dining, and resort destination.
But, you won’t just find a Hawaii hotel or Hawaii resort to be the mainstays in this area. In fact, you’ll find a number of historical attractions, if history is your interest. Hulihee Palace and Mokuaikaua Church are located on the area’s main drive. King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Resort was the retreat of choice for King Kamehameha until he passed away in the early 1800s. This Hawaii hotel also has the Ahuena Heiau, a reconstructed temple from days of old. Kailua Pier offers a memorable view of the sunset, and is also where the October Ironman begins and ends in the area.
Historic Kailua Village offers an incredible nightlife as well. You’ll experience the expected – great Hawaiian cuisine, sunset cruises, live music, and special entertaining shows. However, there is one restaurant that stands out from all the others – Don the Beachcomber. The restaurant gets its name from a famous restaurant entrepreneur named Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt, who later changed his name many times, including to that of Don the Beachcomber. This individual is famous for founding a unique style of restaurant that we all know today – tiki restaurants/nightclubs. Interesting the nightclub concept was started in Hawaii, no?
In terms of the Hawaiian nightlife, you can expect to see authentic hula dancers performing live at a variety of seasonal festivals and competitions. Who knows, you might also see talented performers eating fire!
In addition to the attractive nightlife, many coffee plantations exist on the island for your viewing pleasure. When you’re not busy hanging out at your Hawaii resort, these offer a relaxing alternative.
The best thing you can do while staying at a Hawaii hotel is to stay informed. Make sure you constantly talk with staff, watch the television, and check the local papers for different entertainment ideas. Outdoor recreational ideas include snorkeling, scuba diving, and stargazing. If you really have a high sense of adventure, take a helicopter tour of one of the island’s many volcanoes!
The point is that no matter what your idea of relaxation is, you will find something to do. Explore Hawaii and discover the possibilities!
