In the second quarter of 2011, the average asking price for a used car in the UK was £9,206, a 6% drop on the same period in 2010 after taking inflation into account. While, used family car prices fell as much as 23% year on year.

However, among the top ten searched for vehicles on Auto Trader, which accounts for 80% of all available used cars for sale in the UK, only the Ford Fiesta showed an increase in the average asking price over the year. But it’s not all doom and gloom for people who are not trying to sell used Ford cars. Leicester, Canterbury and Nottingham buyers of used cars can get good quality cars from some of the best manufacturers for prices that are considerably lower than a year ago. It has become a buyers’ market for UK motorists, so those looking to sell their car could make a strategic change in their model of choice. Of the remaining top ten marques, all nine recorded prices reductions. The most searched for used car, the BMW 3-Series, showed a 15.8% reduction in the second quarter of 2011 compared to 2010. Buyers are also taking, on average, one week longer to buy a used car this year compared to last, as they become more cautious.

Buyers in the north should beware, however. Although traditionally the north of England has seen cheaper used car prices compared to the south, Auto Trader found that the average asking price for a Ford Mondeo in Scotland was £8,536 compared to £5,755 in the South West.
