This latest Blackberry OS certainly moves the handsets much more in line with the more popular brands such as Apple and HTC, without sacrificing any of the functionality that traditionally attract professional users to these devices.
Any new release of a Blackberry handset is always greeted with much anticipation, and this is certainly the case with the Blackberry 9800, or as it is more affectionately known, the Torch. This excitement has been enhanced with the first pictures of the handset, revealing an unusual slider design combined with ultra modern good looks. There is a more impressive aspect to this handset however which is the use of a new, revamped Blackberry operating system which provides a gorgeous interface and some excellent features.

This latest addition to the range uses the very latest version 6.0 software. Anybody who has used an older handset in this range will be aware of the web browsing experience on a Blackberry was not a patch on that offered on any of the other big platforms, and this proved a real problem for developers, given that these devices were primarily designed with the business man at heart, exactly the type of consumer who demands the best on line experience. So how have RIM improved this on the latest version of their software. Well the former browser has been removed, and replaced with a much more user friendly WebKit based browser. Webkit is effectively a program that enables browsers to render web pages, and it is the framework that is currently used in both Google Chrome and also the Safari browser used on the range of Apple iPhones. It is also used on more specific designs, with the most notable example of this being Amazons Kindle e book system. Tabbed browsing has also been implemented, meaning the user can peruse a web site, then move on to another web page without closing the one they are using. This allows simple flicking between open pages. On top of all of these improvements, the browser is also much quicker, which combined with the excellent connectivity option on offer leads to a pretty comprehensive improvement in this area.

The Blackberry Torch already holds great appeal to a younger audience thanks to its excellent Blackberry Messenger facility that enables users to IM other blackberry users free of charge, but this appeal has increased thanks to the new operating system offering some superb social networking facilities. The most notable of these is the aggregated feed. This works in a similar manner to the popular Friendstream function offered by popular brand HTC. This takes updates received from sites such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as RSS feeds and presents them in one time line. How this benefits the consumer is that it saves you logging into separate programmes to retrieve information. It is not only a great system for reading updates, type your own into the box and it will simultaneously be posted to all relevant sites, which could potentially save lots of time.

This latest Blackberry OS certainly moves the handsets much more in line with the more popular brands such as Apple and HTC, without sacrificing any of the functionality that traditionally attract professional users to these devices.
