As far as personal honors go there are few more flattering than being chosen as a groomsman. But this is a position filled with real responsibility. The requirements aren't really hard to meet but it takes a willingness to place the groom's needs above your own whenever possible. In this guide I will go over a few ways of how you can make your friend's special day as special as possible. We will cover the basic duties of a groomsman and add some extra tips in case you're also chosen to be the best man.
First, you will be expected to pay for the rental of your Tux. And this means going to the shop and making sure that it is fitted correctly. You're a reflection of the groom and it's your job to make him look good. You are also expected to work with the best man in planning and paying for the bachelor party. Try to do something special for your friend that will fit his wants and needs more than your own.
Next there is the rehearsal of the ceremony and the rehearsal dinner. At the rehearsal you'll just go through the basic movements of the ceremony and you'll find out who you walk down the aisle with and where you stand. And then the rehearsal dinner is just a treat for the wedding party and others who are close to the family.
And next comes the big day and this is where your commitment to the bridegroom will truly be tested. Your job is to take care of every need and every concern so all that the groom has to do is walk down the aisle. This means acting as the concierge to him and all of the guests(and driving him to the ceremony if you're the best man). While this may sound daunting it isn't that complicated or difficult. Basically, you will just help where you're needed. This can be everything from helping the guests get seated, handing out programs or checking coats. Always make sure you're doing something. Weddings are made up of a lot of moving parts and you can help make sure everything runs smoothly. If you're the best man then your most important duty is to hold onto the ring. Take this job seriously. There's a reason why a groomsmen losing the wedding ring is such a common trope in comedies. It can really derail a wedding.
At the reception it's common for the groomsmen to have a set dance with the bridesmaids, so during this time just try to act natural and don't do anything you wouldn't want captured on film. At any rate just relax, this is a casual tradition and no one will be taking off points for missteps.
The most nerve-racking part of being a best man is probably going to be the best man speech. If you're the best man make sure that whatever you decide for your speech comes from the heart. And try not to embarrass anyone too badly—especially not yourself. And the best way to ensure that this doesn't happen is with practice practice practice.
Then after the reception comes to a close you should help with clean up and make sure the only thing that the newlyweds have to do is climb into their car and start their lives together.
And when it's your turn and you pick a set of groomsmen to help you during your wedding, make sure you reward them with a unique groomsman gift like the Capcatcher.
