So, what is the Digital Revolution? I hear you say! The Digital Revolution is the on-going shift from analog mechanical and electronic technology to that of digital technology. It started in the early 1980’s and continues in the year 2011 and onwards. The term can also stand to express the rapid changes of technology in the 20th century and the ways in which digital technology is increasingly benefitting our lives.

In the early 90’s the Digital Revolution first saw a rise in digital technology through the use of mobile phones. Barely unrecognisable from the phones we know today, these large brick-like devices gained around 12.4million users worldwide (approx. 0.25% of the 1990’s global population). Internet usage was just starting out too, with around 2.8million users in 1990. However, just 20 years down the line the Digital Revolution is extremely clear! In 2010 it is thought there are a staggering 4 billion mobile users (67% of the world’s population) and 1.8 billion internet users (26.6% of the current global population).

Technologies which have shifted from analog to digital include:

Music (from Cassette to CD and MP3 players)

Video (from VHS to DVD’s and BlueRay)

Telecommunications (from a Pay-Phone to a Mobile Phone)

Typing/Print (from Typewriter to Computer Keyboard)

Photography (from Analog to Digital Cameras)

The way in which we consume media has greatly shifted with this Digital boom. No longer do we just rely on print or TV content, the internet (an important part of the Digital Revolution) has changed the way we access media. In this day and age not only can we consume media and communicate via web on our computers, but our mobile phones have become devices with which we can access the internet too. It’s clear the popularity of using your mobile to access the internet is only going to rapidly grow! Business and organisations are working hard to ensure their web content is easy to view via a mobile device and some are getting unique mobile websites built as well. There are businesses available online for those who don’t have the development skills to get top notch mobile web design built for their consumers – something that would not have been happening had the Digital Revolution not been so important!

From here on, the Digital Revolution shows no signs of stopping. Internet technology gets more and more impressive each year and over the next few years in the UK television is becoming officially a ‘digital’ device, with analog television being ousted in every town! Digital television does not highly differ from the viewer’s point of view; however digital television is only accessible through a Freeview box which will always offer more than the standard analog 4-channels, so digital television is going to really open up the choices of what users watch in the future. This is especially important for older people who may not have access to television through the web or expensive cable/satellite packages!
