Welding is an essential process which involves metals softened by applying heat, is used to affix two pieces together for various industrial purposes. Other than large scale industrial uses, welding is implemented for household needs also. Variety of welding processes is implemented in industries which depend on various factors and so all forms of welding are not the same. Basically electric current and gas flame are used for heating metals.

Arc welding is the most commonly used type of welding because of its low cost. Electric current is used for heating the metal and the electric arc joins the metals by fusion thus accomplishes the welding process effectively. This is one of the oldest forms of welding still in existence because of its cost-effective nature. Technology has created new subsidiaries to this type of welding and is now implemented for various welding and fabrication needs. An excellent advantage of Arc welding is that it can be performed effectively irrespective of the position and so it finds a wide variety of applications in different aspects.

One of the faster welding processes is the Electroslag welding which is used to join plates of large materials with weld metal into the space between the two plates. Mostly water is used to fill the weld space which prevents the molten metal from flowing off. Large machinery and equipments are used in this welding process and the materials to be welded arranged in the right position. Thicker metals can be easily welded using this technique and this gives higher rates of deposition.

Flux cored arc welding uses electrode filled with flux and is an automatic form of welding used for faster processes. Speed and ability are the key advantages offered by such type of welding process and can be implemented on different materials. Flux cored welding provides smooth and uniform finish and so is used as an excellent welding technique in various fields.

Gas metal arc welding is used mostly in automobile and other manufacturing industries because of its faster results in a little time. External gases are used in the welding process which creates a safety shield for the weld zone thus making multiple weld layers at a single point. This is the simple and most economical welding process and is suitable for thin sheets of metals.

Plasma arc welding uses electrodes and ionized gases whereas shielded metal arc welding uses melted alloys and ensures good results. High welding productivity is offered by submerged arc welding, which uses granular flux for the process and can be implemented only in a horizontal position.

Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) are other excellent techniques of welding and are known to be the powerful welding processes performing welding in all positions.
