Most people know that Bingo is a numbers game played with cards. However, the game of Bingo is played differently depending on where you play, and there is actually a card game named Bingo as well.
|
Similar to regular Bingo, the card game is based on matching numbers. Players are dealt cards from a regular 52 card deck, usually five each but can be more depending on how many players you have, and then the remaining cards are placed face down on the table. A card is drawn from the top and players have to match the number with a card in their hand. Once a player runs out of cards they have Bingo and win the game. There are different betting scenarios based on variations of the game, such as "Sixty Six Bingo', in which players are dealt six cards and there is six common cards. Players will decide prior to starting play if the high or low hand will win in the event that no one cleans out their hand.
In the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, Bingo is played differently than it is played in the United States and Canada. In UK Bingo, players use printed tickets of only 15 numbers to match the numbers called. This game is also known by the name of Housie or Housey Housey. This type of Bingo card has nine rows with columns of three, making a total of 27 spaces. The columns in each row will consist of the following numbers:
Column 1: 1-9
Column 2: 10-19
Column 3: 20-29
Column 4: 30-39
Column 5: 40-49
Column 6: 50-59
Column 7: 60-69
Column 8: 70-79
Column 9: 80-90
A caller then calls random numbers until there is a winner. Winning combinations include a Line, covering five horizontal numbers, Two Lines, which cover any two lines on the same ticket, and a Full House, which is covering all 15 numbers on a ticket. There are Super Housie games in New Zealand that are bonus games that winners can claim winners on three lines. In the national Bingo game that is played in the UK, only the Full House game is played.
In the American and Canadian Bingo game, the card consists of pre-printed numbers on a card that is made up of a five by five matrix. A caller calls numbers until someone shouts "Bingo'. Bingo can be achieved by matching all the numbers in a row either up and down, across, or diagonally. There are variations on the basic rules as well, such as games that will require the whole card to be filled in order to have a winning ticket.
With the emergence of the Internet, online Bingo has become one of the most popular games played on a computer. There are more and more people playing everyday, and the number of places you can find online that offer Bingo games has expanded dramatically. Almost every gaming website has some form of Bingo game available, and there are a multitude of Bingo websites available as well.
While it is not a new game, it looks like Bingo has been able to withstand the test of time, and continues to be a popular game among people of all ages. Now that it is easier than ever to play from the comfort of your own home, it stands to reason that this legendary game is one that will be enjoyed by many for years to come.
