There was a time when a landline connection was the preserve of the wealthy who could afford it. The landline was looked up to as something out of the ordinary. But the advent of the mobile phone changed all this. Today having a landline connection is passed away. Mobile phones are "the rage" with new additions coming into the market every other day!

When mobile phones were first introduced, the few who owned a mobile stood out in the crowd and were looked at with awe. Today mobile phones and the mobile market has undergone a sea change with new mobiles, loaded with the newest or revamped popular features, being introduced in the market each day. Today the race is on not to just own a mobile but to be one up on others and own a mobile with features that will make the mobile owner and his or her mobile the object of envy and admiration. For instance, mobile phones allow you to:

- Check your email
- Take pictures
- Send text messages
- Listen to music
- Surf the Internet
- Watch videos
- Check social networking sites
- Find your destination etc.

Today we have mobile phones that are sleek, fit into your pockets, can be carried to where you want, and keep in touch whenever, wherever. What's more, the hearing and the talking device are all integrated into this tiny bit of gadget that fits into your palm. People have been finding it difficult to carry a digital camera, a handy camera, an mp3 player and a mobile phone where ever they go. This has been well understood by the mobile phone manufactures;

In order to satisfy the customers and to attract more customers the first step taken in the development trend was the integration of the camera, video camera and Mp3 in a mobile device. Once this was done the next step was to develop these features. The latest features that are present in cell phones are

o Mp3 player - Ericsson and Nokia MP3 players have to be purchased as a separate plug-in, while the Samsung phones have built in MP3 players. the mobile phone plays Mp3 songs with high clarity and greater bass effects.

o Blue tooth - Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows to transfer the data between mobile phones. With Bluetooth mobile phones you can do the following:

# Connect to your PC to transfer files and perform a backup.
# Exchange business cards, calendar entries and photos with other users
# Use a Bluetooth headset for hands-free calling
# Connect to a Bluetooth GPS unit for satellite navigation

o Touch screen - Every thing is getting converted to touch screen technology only. That means no more keypads at all.

o 3G- This technology is the latest in mobile communications. This is a technology that is used to connect the mobile to the Internet and browse websites with a greater speed of connectivity. 3G is a cell phone network protocol.

o GPS and GPRS - GPS is a positioning service that can determine any location on earth, through a process called trilateration, hence the name Global Positioning System. On the other hand, GPRS is a data service technology that enables 2G telecommunication networks to provide services other than voice calls. These services include access to email, multimedia messaging, and a somewhat limited access to the internet.

o Video call - The technology enables peer-to-peer video calling as well as multipoint video conferencing on mobile phones. Video call feature is similar to the video chat that is performed using the camera of the phones

o Integrated cam - A camera phone is a mobile phone which is able to capture either still photographs or video. The latest camera resolution is 5-mega pixels, which is more than the basic digital camera and gives a great sense of clarity.

o Wifi - When a mobile phone has embedded Wi-Fi technology, the handset can access the Internet through a nearby wireless network at your home, a coffee shop, a business or anywhere with an active wireless router.

o Cyber shot - First we saw the "Walkman" range of Sony Ericsson phones, and now Sony Ericsson present the "Cybershot" range, using another Sony sub-brand to apply to this new range of 3.2 megapixel camera phones. The cyber shot is taking photos in motion with autofocus & an image stabilizer.

o Black berry - A mobile phone that performs all operations as that of a computer and can be used to do office jobs while staying in home. In short all-in-one mobile and e-mail device.

Mobile Phones have revolutionized the way the world thinks, the way it talks, and the way it moves & they are quickly developing into state-of-the-art electronic devices that are not easy to live without.
