Bingo is an exciting game of chance that provides hours of entertainment for the young and old alike. Each player in Bingo receives a card with 5 rows and 5 columns, containing different numbers and headed by the letters B-I-N-G-O. Numbered balls or slips of paper are then drawn at random, and players mark off the corresponding number and letter combination on their playing card. For example, if a ball marked B5 is drawn, players look on their card in column B for the number 5. If the number is present, the player places a marker over that space on the card. If the number is not present, the player does nothing. When a player has markers on 5 spaces in a row, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, the player has secured a tasty Bingo victory. The player then calls out, "Bingo," to announce his winning. In most games, the first player to reach Bingo receives a prize of some sort.
Many people wrongly assume that Bingo is a merely a game for retired or small children. There exists no bigger fallacy. Bingo is a fantastic game for anyone who enjoys good-natured competition and the social nature of a game night. It is often played in large halls or venues where cash prizes are offered. Strangers may sit at large tables together, laughing and making new friends as they play. Many churches also have a Bingo night every week or month, depending on the organization. These nights are often very popular and help bring together families within the congregation. Some churches even turn the Bingo night into a potluck, creating a tasty Bingo game that is fun for the whole family. Bingo can be a children's game, but it is much more commonly used as a gambling game to earn money for charitable organizations or personal gain. Bingo is also available for play online on various gaming and gambling websites. Most of these sites include automated game markers and computer-generated graphics. Many of these websites allow players to gamble and interact with other uses on the site; however, they do not hold the same social element as a game played with many people in a group environment.
Bingo is believed to be a descendant of the Italian Lottery, and was adopted by many cultures before finally making it's appearance in the United States in the early 20th century, when businessman Ed Lowe came across the lottery-like game while on a trip to Germany. It was originally known in the United States as "Beano" because players used small beans to mark the numbers on their cards. It was not until 1929 when someone stammered, "Bingo!" to declare their win that Ed Lowe got the idea to market the game as Bingo. He asked competitors to pay him a small fee to market their versions of the game under the same name, thus making Bingo the generic and best known name of the game. Now, many years later, Bingo has earned itself a place among baseball cards and apple pie as another piece of good, old-fashioned American culture.
