Introduction
In this article I shall be explaining some of the different ways to do wedding photographs. To help you be organised for you first day shooting.

Shot List
One of the best preparation tips that can be given is to have the couple make a ‘shot list’ that has a list of any specific shots or a list of people they want to be photographed with. Doing this ensures the couple will always have the memories they want; after all there is nothing like a disaster of no photos of the bride and her family!

Family Shot Coordinator
Have the couple select a member of each side of the family to be the family shot coordinator, when trying to get a group photo of the happy couple when everyone is in the ‘festive’ spirit and everyone is moving can be hard – have the co-ordinator gather everyone together and settle them to ensure that the couple can get the dream snaps and then get back to enjoying their day!

Scout & Prep the Location
Go and visit the location and have a scout around for any beauty spots or where you can ‘just catch the right light’ ready for the big day. Have a think about the photos the couple have requested on the spot list and find the best locations for them.

Set the expectations
Ensure the couple are aware of your style of photography and find out what they want, try and plan out as best you can how and where you are going to get the shots they want.

Have a backup
Having a second photographer can be useful to ensure you get all the shots the couple want, it also allows you to relax a little more and spend time and effort into every shot not just being ‘snap happy’.

Shoot the small details
Photograph rings, shoes, backs of dresses, table settings, menu’s - all the little things that people will want to remember about the day!

Have two cameras, or a lens or two!
By having one camera and lens your restricting yourself to the shots you can take, I suggest a standard angle lense and a wide angle, preferably on two different units but if not carry a spare lens, swapping cameras or lens’s could make the shot that much more memorable!
Shoot in RAW
Shooting in RAW normally is extra work (processing time), but at a wedding with all the different lighting and usually colors it pays off to shoot in RAW as you can edit the photographs to perfection afterwards!

Display the shots
Taking a laptop to the reception and quickly copying the snaps over so people can have a look at them really pays off, just leave the laptop on a table (watched of course) on slideshow mode with your pictures and it will pay off wonders, plus you can get feedback on your work!

Continuous Shoot mode
Having the ability to shoot a lot of images fast is very handy on a wedding day so switch your camera to continuous shooting mode and use it. Sometimes it’s the shot you take a second after the formal or posed shot when everyone is relaxing that really captures the moment!

Expect the unexpected
Just because when you scouted the venue it was a warm sunny summers day doesn’t mean mother nature will play the scenario you want, always be waiting for that black cloud over the horizon. Even if its mother nature it could be the bride runs late, the groom pulls a hangover card, the best man drops the ring, it has happened before, and will happen again.

Relax!
Last but not least just relax and enjoy your work, if you rush or get stressed then it will show in the photographs, just relax yourself and then the targets of the shots will too. If people seem tense just crack a smile (the irony being the photographer) and it will help relax them!
