EOTech is the maker of an optic that is definitely worth considering if you've been thinking of buying a red dot type sight for your rifle. For those serious about the use of their rifle the EOTech as well as the Aimpoint are really the only two brands they will want to consider. Almost all of the lesser quality competitors should be disregarded Though EOTech and Aimpoint have their advantages and disadvantages I will discuss only EOTech's line of sights in this writing.

It's nearly unmatched capacity for extremely fast aiming is the most apparent characteristic of EOTech that distinguishes it from the lower end competitors. Beyond being just an advantage, the capability to efficiently acquire a target is an absolute necessity in a lot of applications. Those in the military, police officers and hunters have all seen the advantages of the EOTech in this area.

The EOTech's capacity for quick aiming is permitted by a couple of qualities:
- The design of the reticle: Though many models offer further options, the standard reticle design uses a 65 minute of angle (MOA) circle with a much smaller 1 MOA spot in the middle. The larger circle is very visible even at a glance and allows the shooter to get on close up targets exceedingly swiftly while the small dot still allows for correct aiming at distant targets.
- The scale of the sight window: The sight housing on the EOTech is wide open when contrasted to other varieties of scopes including other similar red dot type optics. In other words you don't need to be concerned with precisely lining up your eye each time you shoot.

Few will have a hard time finding an acceptable offering from EOTech since their product line consists of well over a dozen kinds of red dot sights, normally with various variations of each. The biggest differences in design typically are a result of the differences in the type of batteries used. All optics in the 510 series, as in the commonly used model 516, use AA batteries and are there fore the largest of the company's designs. The sights employing the far smaller lithium CR123 batteries, such as the model 553, are in comparison noticeably shorter. By no small amount the shortest optics in EOTech's line of products are in the newest (spring '09) XPS series. Models including the XPS2 take advantage of the far tinier lithium batteries.

There are a few possible downsides to EOTech that some users often mention. While the battery life is estimated at a thousand hours for most models, this is still less by a noticeable margin than that of many Aimpoint brand red dot sights. And while a thousand hours sounds like a long time, it can go by quicker than you would imagine for those whose weapon is being used every single day. Another thing that is often mentioned in comparison with the Aimpoint is EOTech's propensity to more often malfunction in certain extreme situations or environments. Again this is extremely rare and is only brought up when contrasting it to it's only other real competitor in quality but it is worth noting, particularly if you depend on your weapon on a daily basis. Asking a hundred people, knowledgeable of this type of optic, which of these brands they prefer would likely yield fifty responses for each. This polarization of opinions is why I have chosen to stick mainly with highlighting the benefits of one brand while steering away from the popular arguments and while fully recognizing the equal worth of the competitor.

These differences and a lot of others provide for the user to pick out a sight to best suit the application they have . No optic is without flaw for all situations however.
