Venice is a city in northern Italy which is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture and its artworks. It is the capital of the Veneto region. The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century B.C. The city historically was the capital of the Venetian Republic. Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals"

Churches, Venice
S. Maria della Salute is a landmark.
Santa Maria della Salute is my favoured church in Venice, more than San Marco for a very practical reason: during my last two visits to Venice the queue at San Marco was so long that I abandoned any hope of getting inside, while at the "Salute" there was no queue and I could sit quietly on the steps of the square in front of the basilica with a splendid view on the Bacino di San Marco. Even better, there are no pigeons here.

The architectural reason for liking this church is obvious. In 1630 the architect Baldassare Longhena ((1598-1682)), then only 32 years old, was selected to design a new church dedicated to the Virgin Mary after Venice was delivered from the plague that had killed about a third of its population.

Longhena realized a work of a great beauty and homogeneity only completed in 1687, after his death. Santa Maria della Salute achieves perfection in the baroque style which is equalled by no other church of Venice.

The technical exploit is stunning, 1.106.657 piles of oak, alder and larch were needed for the foundations. On top of these 4 m long piles was build a platform called "zatterone" of oak and larch beams fixed together on which the actual stone construction could start.
Open daily: 9 -12 and 15 - 18h. Times may be subject to variation depending on services.

Sestiere San Marco - Chiesa di San Moise
The first church on this site, built of wood, has been founded in 797 and dedicated to San Vittorio.

Beautiful facade of the church dedicated to San Moise, or San Moise profeta, is almost hidden inside the area around Piazza San Marco. It also honours Moise Venier who paid for its rebuilding in 9th century.

The current church is from 1632 while its facade dates from 1668 to the designs of the architect Alessandro Tremignon. The reconstruction was paid for by the Fini family, Vincenzo Fini was the Procurator of San Marco. The elaborate front facade is in Baroque style and covered in carvings, looking very theatrical and made to glory the Fini's. All the docorations, including sculptures in the interiors, are by Flemish sculptor Heinrich Meyring, whom Venetians used to call Merengo.
The bell tower dates from the 14th century with fired brick spired.

Sestiere Canaregio - San Geremia
The first church was erected here in the 11th century and was later on reconstructed several times. The current version dates from the 18th century, while the facade from the mid of 19th century. The brick work bell tower is most probably from the 12th century and has two thin Romanesque mullioned windows at the base. The interor of the church has rather sober walls.
The church of San Geremia is object of pilgrimages and wide devotion for the presence of the relics of Santa Lucia (St. Lucy).

Nightlife
Harry's Bar: The Cipriani head office
No visit to Venice would be complete without a trip to Harrys Bar. The story goes that the present owners father named it after an American named Harry Pickering who gave him the money to start up in business(I dont know the truth of this). Home of the Bellini cocktail.

Unfortunately, one of these great drinks will cost you about 13 euros(last time we were there).

Harrys Bar closes between the first Sundays in January until the beginning of Carnevale.
On the day of closing, old folk are invited to enjoy a free feast. The sign on the door says 'Closed for reflection'
Dress Code: Smart, casual

Caffe Florian: A late night drink
This is history and a really interesting but very expensive cafe.

The cafe had a complete restoration in the second half of the XIX century which is how it appears now, it opened on 29th Dec.1720.

It has been known as a meeting place for artists, poets, writers and politicians. Names like Bryon, Charles Dickens, Casanova, to mention just a few. We were lucky as someone on our trip knew of this cafe, so after a trip to Burano, we stopped in for a nightcap.

It wasn’t cheap but the barman made all the drinks and exactly filled our glasses; there was no laughter from this man.

As it was dark inside the next couple of pictures will be postcards

Restaurant and cafes
Caffe Quadri: Sumptuous hot chocolate
On the first floor of Caffe Quadri, a salon in red velvets and gold and then the very thick hot chocolate arrives. If it's too strong for you, you can add some milk. Plenty of lovely cookies to go with it and a refill of chocolate too.

I have no idea about the price, as it was included in our programme. However, two days before I drank the most expensive coca cola there, ever!

Taverna San Trovaso: Top Tip: Give this place a miss!
This restaurant has been recommended both here and on several other review sites so I convinced myself - and my family - we had to give it a try. It looks lovely from the outside, was convenient for our hotel and has a well-priced menu with good veggie options, so my family and I decided to eat there the Sunday evening of our long weekend.

Venice is beautiful place to visit and I am sure that your trip always is memorable after visiting this wonderful places and enjoyed in discos, nightclubs and cafes make your trip memorable and book your Venice flights now.
