The Ford Transit has acquired the title of “the back bone of Britain” publicised by Ford in TV and radio adverts. They claim this based on the numbers of Transits out there and their popularity amongst tradesmen and fleet operators. The Transit has been around in one form or another since 1965; it has been the best selling light commercial vehicle in Europe for 40 years.
Ford launched the latest incarnation of the Transit in 2006; it was a facelift of the previous model. It has revised new front and rear lights, a new front end and a new interior featuring the gearstick on the dashboard. Along with the new design changes, Ford also introduced a new engine from the Ford Ranger range. The diesel engine went from a 2.0 litre to a 2.2 litre, and all engines now come with high-pressure common rail (TDCi) systems.
In the panel van range, there are short, medium and long wheel base models, plus the option of an extended frame and low roof, medium roof and high roof vans and minibuses. Both front and rear-wheel drive options are on offer as well as the usual chassis-cab variants.
Ford has changed the perception of a white van driver as being rugged, rough and not needy of creature comforts. The inside of the Transit has been transformed and now meets the needs of a Mercedes S Class driver.
Options for a used Ford Transit Northwest include: satellite navigation, leather seats, cruise control, a visibility pack - featuring heated front windscreen, rain sensing wipers auto headlights and an auto rear wipe, Bluetooth capability and rear parking sensors.
