The Google Nexus S is the second instalment of the Google Nexus series. Manufactured by Samsung, one of the most impressive features of this comprehensively functional handset is its amazing touchscreen.

Not only does it offer an interactive and lightning fast means of navigate the user interface, but it also makes the device great for viewing content such as videos, games, and websites. This article takes a closer look at the technology behind the screen, and how this benefits the user on a day to day basis.

The Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen measures 4 inches; many users see this as the perfect size for a touchscreen phone. The screen remains large enough to view the content, yet compact enough for the pixel resolution of the screen to maintain its integrity. Also, if the screen was much bigger, then rest of the phone would have to be larger to compensate for this, so a 4 inch screen also means that the phone itself remains pocket friendly.

The technology behind the screen is very advanced, and goes to show how far mobile technology has come in the last couple of years. The Google Nexus S takes full advantage of this by incorporating the latest Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen technology. AMOLED stands for Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. Whilst the details of this are very technical, the advantages are simple; faster refresh rates and improved display quality over standard OLED screens. However the Super AMOLED screen offers further refinements and advantages. One of the main problems many people face with smartphones is the poor battery life which is largely down to power consumption by the screen. The Super AMOLED screen offers improved battery life meaning that users of the Google Nexus S can talk, surf the web, and listen to music for longer than would be possible with many competing smartphones. Of course one of the many benefits of having an advanced touchscreen is the improved display quality. The Google Nexus S is able to display up to 16 million colours on it’s screen, which offers a pixel layout of 480x 800. Therefore, watching video clips, as well as online videos such as those found on YouTube, playing games, and browsing the internet and user interface in general is a much more interactive and engaging experience; the contents of the screen are bright with amazing detail, yet blacks remain deep and true, which can make all the difference to viewing a high definition video.

The addition of a powerful 1GHz processor also benefits the screen in that it allows users to navigate the interface at very high speeds. It gives the screen the power to responds instantly, and with very little lag. Features like this make all the difference to a smartphone user, to the point where the difference is very noticeable when using a lower spec device.

Whilst there is much more to the Google Nexus S than just the screen, it is certainly one of its crowning features, and sets it apart from the majority of competing devices. It may not seem like an important aspect to begin with, but as you can see, it makes all the difference to the user’s experience of the phone.
