Satellite TV Proves a Worthy Opponent to Cable TV. The reputation of the satellite dish has evolved. In the past it was an unsightly extension of a house whose residents generally did not care much for television and decided to put up with the dish's hassle to access the news and cartoons. But recently, the dish has come to represent the individuals who use it- smart spenders who take television programming very seriously.
Cable television, satellite television's longtime opponent, has not re-invented itself in the same way that satellite TV has. Cable has maintained a lengthy history of usage in the US and is used more than satellite TV- a trend that may very well be reversed in years to come for the following reasons:
Cable cost per month averages to about $74.99 for 150 channels with a handful of "premium" networks available only in the most pristine packages (whose average price runs approximately $102.00). Excluding the actual television, necessary equipment is minimal. Only a receiver is needed to enjoy cable television. Installation fees average to $29.99.
The average monthly payment for 150 channels using a satellite provider is $32.50- less than half of cable's rate. Necessary equipment includes a dish, and a receiver for each television. Most satellite providers supply their customers with one dish and multiple receivers for free including a one receiver with Digital Video Recorder (DVR) capabilities.
The above fees represent television provided digitally, however, one can upgrade a package to receive a high definition (HD) feed for an average of $10.50 per month. For satellite TV, a high definition receiver is required. HD receivers are available for an average of $136.00, while HD/DVR receivers are available for a surprising average of $99.00.
Some cable providers do charge for installation, while most satellite providers do not. Among the providers that do charge, the average for a one time installation fee is $36.50.
Both cable and satellite TV providers offer what is usually called a "bundle" or "package" deal, that is, a package that includes television, telephone, and internet access. In most cases, signing up for such a deal can marginally lower television fees.
How satellite television evolved is a mystery- not too long ago, most people looked at a satellite dish and saw dollar signs coupled with a hassle of hardware and headaches. Now, satellite television proves to be an intelligent alternative to cable television and is exponentially becoming the more popular choice.
