You are aware of the importance of motorcycle and ATV batteries. Now how do you go about purchasing the right one for your vehicle? Do you go conventional or Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM)?
Battery Types
There are basically two types of batteries for motorcycles and ATV’s – AGM and conventional.
The AGM is relatively new, and is more popular as a car battery. It is often called maintenance-free, gel cell, or sealed type. But the underlying design of having fiberglass pads between the plates absorbing the electrolyte is common for all.
The advantages associated with this design are:
* Distilled water does not have to be added,
* The cranking capacity is higher, and
* The battery can be installed even at an angle.
However, it comes at a significantly higher price. Also, since it is marketed as maintenance-free, people tend to think that zero maintenance is required. But this is not really the case.
An AGM battery, like its conventional counterpart, is prone to discharge and “sulfation” when not in use. If proper charging is not done, this will severely affect its service life.
Conventional AT V and motorcycle batteries are the ones which we have been using in our vehicles for decades. They have a hard case that houses the plates and electrolyte. There are filler holes on top, which allow adding distilled water. Yes, unlike the AGM’s, conventional batteries need regular checking of electrolyte levels.
The main advantage of this battery type vis-à-vis the AGM variety is the price. It is far more affordable.
However, more frequent checking is required, distilled water will have to be added when necessary, and just like the AGM, trickle charging is needed when not in use.
Choosing the Right Battery Type
The choice of battery type depends on your budget and how much time you can spare for maintenance. But if you have the money available, AGM is the preferred ATV battery type because of its high cranking capability, which is required especially when powering a winch. The same high cranking characteristic will also make fast starting of motorcycles possible.
Regardless of the type of battery you choose, always go for a reliable brand. AGM batteries are not created equal. Some manufacturers make better batteries than others, albeit at a higher price. But considering the significance of the motorcycle batteries in vehicle performance, quality should not be compromised. The same holds true for conventional batteries.
How to Maintain the Reliability of Your Battery throughout its Service Life is a site dealing with atv batteries. It even provides an ATV batteries selector to make your search faster and more convenient. Various types of motorcycle batteries are also included in this website.
* If you are using a conventional battery, regular checking of electrolyte levels is a must. Failure to do so will shorten service life and compromise vehicle performance. Needless to say, this is not necessary for an AGM (sealed type) battery.
* Remove the battery from your vehicle if you do not plan to use it for more than one month. Store it in a warm place atop a piece of wood, plastic, or thick carton. This will minimize discharging.
* Trickle charge your battery. There are “smart” chargers for this purpose, and it worthwhile investing in this device. It will trickle charge your battery when necessary, and shut off when fully charged.
The battery is an important component of your ATV or motorcycle. It is best to maintain it properly for optimum performance and service life.
