Krav Maga is currently one of the nation’s most popular self-defense and fitness classes. With roots in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, Krav Maga’s unique combat style works the entire body, giving students an effective workout as well as the tools necessary to defend themselves in the case of an attack.
Here are the Five Things You Should Know Before You Start Krav Maga…
1.Be Prepared
Krav Maga is just like any other workout in that you should always come to your lesson hydrated, dressed appropriately, and with plenty of energy. Krav Maga’s techniques require a ton of muscle work, so water is crucial to lasting through your class. Your clothing should be suitable for heavy activity and allow for a full range of body movement.
2. Recover After Workouts
Krav Maga works the entire body, which might affect your muscles in a way you don’t expect. If you’re just beginning Krav Maga, provide yourself with an adequate recovery time between your first few lessons to allow your muscles to rebuild and get over soreness. Even if you’re used to other forms of cardio or strength training, your muscles will need to adjust to the new range of movement and activity. Insufficient recovery time could lead to serious injury and fatigued muscles, which will affect your training.
3. Decide What Kind of Krav Maga is Right for You
Different classes will have different focuses when it comes to Krav Maga instruction. While some instructors will stick to the more traditional, combat form of Krav Maga, other instructors have incorporated more of a fitness element into their teaching. If you want to learn self-defense, look for more combat-focused classes. If you just want a good workout, you’ll want to find a class with those elements added in.
4. Take Your Time
Like any form of self-defense, Krav Maga requires thorough instruction and lots of practice. Many of the moves in Krav Maga might be difficult to complete at first, but be patient and remember that everyone has a learning curve in the beginning. You can practice the moves on your own time for quicker mastery, or you can attend an introductory class to help you acclimate yourself with an instructor’s help.
5. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
While some workout classes might allow you to keep to yourself in the corner, Krav Maga will push you out of your comfort zone and make you do things you might not have done before (or want to do). If you’re not up for some blood, sweat, and tears (minus the blood and tears), Krav Maga might not be the workout for you.
There are few workouts today with the same intensity and effectiveness as Krav Maga. If you’re looking for a new workout to get your entire body in shape, or a means of learning self-defense, then find the nearest Krav Maga gym near you and get started!
