All of the SEO advice out there on black-hat optimisation could really join up to comprise a textbook on how to optimise your site the black-hat way. Black hat methods are not good for your site. Of course, most of the writers offering this search engine optimisation advice add a proviso of 'don't try this at home', but after hearing about how effective black-hat techniques are it would not be surprising if many site owners are tempted to go to the dark side.

So why the heck isn't everyone rushing to use black-hat SEO techniques? The main reason is possibly because most people are law-abiding types, even on the net. The SEO industry did a good thing in labelling frowned-upon techniques as 'black-hat'. It denotes them as the evil deeds of SEO, and no one wants to be caught doing an evil deed.
This doesn't answer why you shouldn't attempt some black-hat SEO for a quick boost. An old idiom, however, does: crime doesn't pay. Most people avoid black-hat SEO because they realise how short-term such techniques are. If the search engines don't track down your cloaked information or paid link ring, your competitors will. You can talk to us at SEO Consult about the various SEO pitfalls. Either way, the boost you got for your rankings will disappear, leaving you back at the starting line.
Ultimately, there are more reasons to practice good SEO than bad. Most search engine optimization advice will include a warning that SEO is a long-term thing. If you want quick results, you're better off investing your energies in a short advertising campaign than in doing something that will actively harm your site. It works out better in the long run. With so much good SEO information out there, using black-hat SEO is just plain dumb.
